August 3rd and 4th will mark my 11th Pan Mass Challenge. Our team will once again ride in honor of Olivia, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia last year. Now 4 years old, she still loves “Spidey” and cake pops, and is making progress on her journey to becoming cancer-free. In addition to Liv, I will ride for co-workers, family and friends who are fighting their own battles. It’s a list that hasn’t gotten shorter—but that’s why we ride.
Earlier this year I transitioned to a new role at work, supporting the HomeGoods brand. HomeGoods has deep ties to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. I recently attended a call where DFCI’s Dr. Pozo Kaderman spoke about the impact that HomeGoods has had on their young-adult patient population. In particular, she highlighted the new “HomeGoods Young Adult Lounge”. The Lounge is designed to provide a sense of connection and belonging for young adult patients at DFCI, who’s physical and emotional needs differ from the pediatric and adult populations.
I’ve learned a lot about DFCI’s impact over the years, but this session really struck a chord. Maybe it’s because I’m close in age to the patients that Dr. Kaderman spoke about. Or maybe it was the sense of pride I have for working for a company that takes giving back so seriously. But I think the most impactful part was that I was reminded of how interwoven cancer is in our communities. Throughout the call, people volunteered their own cancer stories and experiences with DFCI. Their stories put things in perspective. Cancer is happening all around us.
In comparison to how prevalent cancer feels, a few hundred miles doesn’t seem like enough to make a difference. Fortunately, there are thousands of us working towards the same goal. We’re in the middle of a movement and can’t afford to lose momentum now.
Since its inception, the PMC has raised $972 million for cancer research, treatment and care at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. This is made possible by the generosity and dedication of every rider, volunteer and supporter. This year, the PMC hopes to exceed $1 billion in funds raised for DFCI. Talk about impact! The road to $1 billion isn't easy, but neither is the fight against cancer. 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to the amazing work being done by the DFCI and the Jimmy Fund. When you support the PMC, you can rest assured that your donation is directly impacting countless lives. We recognize that there are many important causes out there, so on behalf of the PMC, we appreciate your continued support as we strive to be one in a billion.
