Dear Friends,
They say you don't really know someone until you walk a mile in their shoes. That quote is hitting home this year as I prepare for my 19th Pan Mass Challenge.
Over the past 18 years I have come to know cancer survivors and their families. I have known those who have succumed to this disease. And now...I have my own diagnosis.
For the first time I will be riding as someone who has heard the words you have cancer.
My diagnosis of cancer of the parotid gland came in January 2023. I have had amazing care, had successful surgery and treatment and now I am currently in a good place. To say this has been a journey is an understatement. My team at MGH, Mass Eye and Ear and additional medical support from Dana Farber have been second to none. I am please to say we are all optimistic about the prognosis. I know I am one of the lucky ones and not everyone has as much hope for the future.
This is why I Ride.
I am riding for new research, for more effective treatment, and for more people to hear you are cancer free.
I have been a proud member of Team Perini for many years and I will again ride for them this year to support the David Perini Jr. Quality of Life Clinic. The clinic strives to improve the lives of individuals who have had cancer as children. I am also expanding my fundraising family as part of Team PopSciCycles. They are a group that is part of the McGraw/Patterson Divsion of Sciences at Dana Farber. Their goal is to provide support for detection and prevention of many types of cancer, and to communicate important discoveries to at -risk populations.
I have long standing personal relationships with the founders of both Team Perini and Team PopSciCycles and I am excited to support them both.
My goal this year is to raise $20,000. And although I will be unable to ride both days, I will be pedaling 86 miles in one day from Wellesley to Bourne.
So... there are a few things that are different this year, but one thing will remain the same. I will once again have Coleman Fennelly as my pedal partner . For 16 years I have ridden for him and I am happy to say that he is now 18 and thriving! Coleman gives me hope, strength, and a passion for riding each year to support Dana Farber research.
This year's PMC obviously hits close to home and I am more than motivated than ever to hit my fundrasing goals.
If you would like to donate, please visit http://www.pmc.org/egifts and my number is GM0070. If you prefer to make a donation by check, please make the check out to PMC/Jimmy Fund and return the check to me at 62 Plymouth Ave. in Milton, MA. 02186.
Thank you so much !!
