My 25th year!!  For all but the first 5 of those years, I’ve been riding for my little sister Debbie, who was a patient at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) in 2006 and a victim of cancer the following year after an 11-month battle with an incurable brain cancer - Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM).  We officially formed a team in Deb’s memory in 2009 and this year, 20 of Deb’s family members and friends will be riding the PMC as part of Deb’s Team.  We all miss Deb so much and loved her so dearly for her infectious energy, optimism and encouragement, and her contagious, full-bellied laugh that occasionally involved a HONK.  Each year, her husband Jim and her two oldest children, Sophie and Ben, have ridden.  Her youngest of four children, Lucca, will be riding for the first time this year.  Lucca shared the perspective of a 5-year-old girl watching her mother stricken by, suffer from and succumb to this horrible disease on her PMC profile page.  She says of losing her mom: “Cancer makes you feel powerless—especially as a six-year-old who couldn’t fully understand what was happening.”  I can assure you that I felt that same sense of powerlessness at 48-years-old, along with overwhelming grief that turned my world upside down, too.  I can also tell you that riding in the PMC is the most empowered I’ve ever felt as I fight back against this dreaded disease, and that each PMC Weekend provides a powerful dose of healing from the trauma that cancer inflicts on its victims’ family and friends.
