We are all at risk of getting lung cancer. Lung cancer kills over 150,000 people each year in the U.S. - more than breast, colon, prostate, and melanoma cancers combined! Half of those diagnosed today do not smoke, dispelling the myth that it's a smoker's disease. Unfortunately, it's this stigma that causes lung cancer research to be underfunded (see the video link below on the research gap). I discovered these facts 18 years ago when my wife Kathy Loving was diagnosed with lung cancer. I ride the PMC every year in her honor, and I ride to help the tens of thousands battling lung cancer so that they can have better treatment options and longer survival rates
Although I’ve witnessed the devastation lung cancer has on a family, I've also witnessed the progress made in treatment since Kathy’s passing. We now have over a dozen targeted treatment options with new drugs and trials coming out every year, all of which contributes to better survival rates. If these treatments were available to Kathy in 2007 she might have been with us today. It’s too late for Kathy, but it’s not too late for others.
Yet, the research gap continues and the survival rates for lung cancer lag behind. Simply put, we cannot win the war on cancer without winning the war on lung cancer. This is what calls me to action as I ride the PMC with Ian. Jessica and my LungStrong teammates.
Thank you for sponsoring my ride. With every dollar we get closer by the mile.
