As a long-time cycling enthusiast, the PMC has long been on my must-ride list. Little did I know that back in March of 2021 I would receive a diagnosis that would finally push me to commit to ride the PMC.
My personal experience with cancer began when I was diagnosed with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome) in 2021. MDS is a relatively rare form of blood cancer that can only be cured with a stem cell transplant. Fortunately, my oncologist, Jacqueline Garcia MD immediately referred me to Dr. Corey Cutler of the DFC stem cell transplant team. Thankfully, Dr. Cutler agreed that I met the criteria for transplant, and would monitor my condition until I was at the point that transplant was necessary.
Fast forward to April 2023, I received my stem cells and started on the road to recovery. The whole process was as advertised, but I'm powering through it. I'm now 11 months post-transplant and can do all of my normal daily activities. My doctors report that my prognosis is very good.
Now that I'm back in the saddle riding with my bike club, I feel I'm ready to take the leap and commit to the PMC. Riding and raising money for the PMC is the least I can do to show my gratitude for all the help and support I received over the last two years. Early on, I was told that the whole transplant process is life-changing. I second that notion. Living with Cancer can be a lonely and isolating ordeal. I now realize that my continued recovery is contingent on my circle of support. This includes my friends, family, wonderful co-workers at South Shore Hospital, old friends at the VA Boston Healthcare System, and especially my loving wife, Janice. I am blessed to have you all in my life.
I also ride to remember my father Ray Landreville, and my brother Sonny who both succumbed to blood cancer. Since I was carrying the same diagnosis, I feel that I've been chosen to spread the word about the life-saving work being done at DFC. In addition, I would like to give a shout-out to my friends, Tom C. and Diana L. (Living Proof), two cancer survivors who have motivated me to keep pushing forward. Thanks to both of you!
So I humbly ask that you donate whatever you can to the Stem Cell Cyclists team. All the money will go towards Dr. Corey Cutler's stem cell research efforts.
Thanks!!!
Dan
