2012 Letter:
Greetings to all friends, family and colleagues alike…My how time flies! For the last five years, I have had the honor of participating in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), a 190+ mile 2 day bike ride to raise money $$$ for the Jimmy Fund for Cancer and together we have raised over $115,000! Thank you all so much! I am excited to ride again for the sixth year….. Many things have changed since 2007 when I had the rewarding experience of riding in my first Pan Mass Challenge::
ITEM 2007 2012
Pan Mass $$ Raised Over $200 million in its first 27 years Goal = $36 million for 2012… Over $338 million in 32 years thus far…
Dan Laz/your contributions First Year and raised $10K plus Goal = $37,683 for 2012…Over $115,000 plus IN FIVE YEARS
Dan Laz (Hair) Full head of hair and mostly dark “Probably” not as much hair and the gray hair is winning….
Dan Laz (Bike) 1997 Lemond Zurich (i.e. 1997 ?? Honda Accord) 2012 Blue AC (i.e. Ferrari to make old legs not work as hard)
Dan Laz (Readiness Level for Ride Very Fit! Hey, I was six years younger! Cagy Veteran who knows course and will conserve energy..
So….. I am older, on a faster bike and mentally ready for this year and I have that going for me …which is nice…..
I am doing my training rides, getting ready, and while I have been doing that, the world and cancer just keep right on going. Since 2007, we have seen:
• Biggest Financial Meltdown in 50 plus years late 2008, and steadied in 2009, 2010 and 2011 but is still languishing…..
• Unemployment in the United States reached 10% and is still above 8% and is still dragging along during 2012…..
• Greece, Spain, Italy and much of Europe on the brink of mounting debt…..
• Foreclosures, credit card delinquencies, shrinking credit availability somewhat flattening but … oh my!
• Natural Disasters from tsunamis, to tornados, nuclear near meltdown, the oil spills in the gulf….. Yuck!!
Hmmm, and while that was going on……Cancer kept right ongoing….
• 570,000+ Americans died of Cancer in the past 12 months (more than 1,500 people a day)
• An additional 1,700,000 Americans have been diagnosed with some form of Cancer in the past 12 months
• 12,000,000+ Americans alive today are living with some form of cancer
• Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease.
• In the US, Cancer accounts for 1 of every 4 deaths.
Since 2007, many well- known figures in the world have died of cancer including: , Paul Newman, Smoking’ Joe Frazier, , Lyle Alzado, Chuck Daly, Bill Walsh, Curt Gowdy, Gene Upshaw, Gary “the Kid” Carter, Craig “Ironhead” Heyward, and Wayman Tisdale to name a few….
Cancer has more than 100 distinct diseases. Cancer affects one in every three persons born in developed countries and is a major cause of sickness and death throughout the world. Significant improvements in cancer treatment have been achieved through a combination of timely and accurate diagnosis, selective surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapeutic drugs. The five year survival rate for all forms of cancer overall is now 67% (as of 2007) up from 49% just 30 years ago. Such advances actually have brought about a decrease in cancer deaths also! Continuing advances in cell biology, genetics, and biotechnology, have given researchers a fundamental understanding of what goes wrong in a cancer cell and in an individual who develops cancer??and these conceptual gains are steadily being converted into further progress in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this disease. Long lasting progress and cures will take more time and more $$$...
If you want lots of detail about cancer stats and education, go to:
So why do I ride again?? Well, because the world may not be all that rosy out there, but Cancer still doesn’t care about the economy or natural disasters (as tough as those things may be too many people)…..
And frankly, because, I just really don’t like cancer… It has affected too many people I know…. Friends, family and colleagues alike….
Lastly, I can and continue to believe in this cause to help make a difference!
So if you can help, please do!
On August 4th and 5th, I will again be part of Team Boston Harbor Hotel (wearing the smiley face jerseys on the second day ?? see team photo attached):
• Approximately 5,000 plus riders dedicating their weekend to riding our bicycles as part of the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC)
• We will ride 190+ miles over two days.
• Last year, the Pan-Mass Challenge raised $34,000,000, of which 100% of these contributions went directly to the Jimmy Fund for Cancer for charitable purposes.
• The PMC began in 1980 and is now the largest single fund raising athletic event in the U.S.
• The Jimmy Fund supports the fight against cancer at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, helping to increase the chances of survival for children and adults with cancer around the world.
OUR GOAL TOGETHER:
• Finish the ride for the sixth year in a row!!!
• Raise at least $ 37,683….. This represents $1 more than my last year’s total of $37,682.
• Add to our sixth year total $$ raised and go over the $150,000 total for dollars raised in my six years of participation by hitting this year’s goal. Five year total = $ 115,490
I will personally match all of your generous (tax deductible) donations on a dollar-for-dollar basis.
For those of you that made contributions and for all your motivation and emails and letters over the past five years, I want to thank you for your support and generosity!! It means a lot to me!!
2011 PMC UPDATE:
We finished the 192 Mile two day ride this past weekend! Woo Hoo! Heat, rain, wind … we had it all, but the thousands of people on the route cheering us on, my teammates and the support of the thousands of volunteers got us through….
2011 Fundraising so far = $40,000 plus with some $$$ still being processed!!! Crushed our goal together! THANK YOU!! Five Year total is now more than $115,000. Thank You ALL!!!!
So, this past weekend, I completed my fifth Pan Mass Challenge (PMC), a two-day 192 mile bicycle ride from Sturbridge to Provincetown. It was truly awesome!!!
I have attached a link to www.pmc.org to the PMC Website which has the video of the opening ceremonies with Lance Armstrong, Billy Starr and a truly inspirational story of a survivor and his family. It is worth watching !! (49 minutes long)
Thanks to your generous contributions, together we have raised over $40,000!!! Wow!! This is well above my personal committed goal of $26,360 and all for The Jimmy Fund, which supports cancer research for the Dana-Farber institute. Thank you so much!!! The total fundraising for the PMC is still on-going, but is on track to exceed their record-breaking goal of $34 million!
Many of you know I like numbers and stats so here are a few from the weekend…5386 riders, 37 states represented, 13 countries, 30 percent female, ages 13 to 80 participating… Amazing!
I must tell you it was again an unforgettable weekend experience, in which the thrill of riding was trumped by the unbelievable feeling (many goose-bumps and chills up the back of your spine moments) of participating in such an outstanding event. I want to share with you my overall observations:
Team Boston Harbor Hotel (Our Team) - Thank you Paul Jacques! Our team sponsor took care of all of our personal logistics; transportation to Sturbridge on Friday, rooms at the Sturbridge Host Inn on Friday night and a room to shower and change on Sunday in Provincetown. Thanks to my teammates I rode with and how we helped each other finish this two day 190+ mile journey. (Joe Laz, Paul, Mitch, Kerry, Amy, Glenn, and Linda) ….Again, thank you Paul Jacques!
I truly believe I get more out of my effort this weekend than I put into it and it re-energizes my outlook on life and perspective in such a positive way more and more each of the past five years I have participated. I want to thank each of you for supporting me and the PMC to benefit the Jimmy Fund. It is a great cause! I have tried to reach out individually to all of you to offer my heart felt thanks…. Much appreciated! Thanks Again and Giddy up! Dan Laz
