CRUS11TOUR MISSION:
Raise much needed funds to support brain cancer research. This is a niche cancer, where research funding and pharmaceutical support is more limited than one would expect. Money raised through CRUS11TOUR goes into two funds (Current Use and Endowed) designated for brain cancer research, which have been established at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
BACKGROUND:
2024 will be my seventh year suporting the CRUS11TOUR. I ride to support cancer research in memory of Davey Hovey, the son of my dear friends Dave and Leigh, grandson of my former employer and great mentor, David (Chief) Hovey. Following in his family’s footsteps, Davey learned to sail along the shores of Stage Harbor in a small Opti, then a Laser and a 420. Davey excelled through Sailing School and at the age of 15 was hired as a junior instructor. Just as he had learned from older instructors, Davey patiently taught students, ages 6-12, the knots, terms, parts-of-the-boat, knowledge and boat handling skills that he had learned years earlier. He raced in local series and in the end-of-summer championship, the Hovey Cup, named after his great grandfather and founding Commodore, Fritz Hovey.
True to Davey's competitive spirit, over the course of his 16-month struggle with his Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme, Davey created a path to defeating cancer, and his family and friends have vowed to continue the fight to crush this disease. I am honored to ride as a part of the CRUS11TOUR team.
Thank you for supporting Davey’s memory and the work of Dr. David Reardon and his team at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in continuing to attack and defeat cancer.
Best regards,
Drew
