2025 is my 27th PMC This journey began in '98 when Lisa was diagnosed with a malignant Brain Tumor - Doctors explained that there would be no prognosis. The average life span of a Gliblastoma patient was not encouraging, a year or two was medically expected. Treatment was geared to extend Lisa's chances of survival by months. We were thinking in "Months" That was 1998. Following treatments we worried. Alot. With our 2 and 4 year old daughters we fought, hoping for the best and continued living our lives. I rode an old bike for the Brain Tumor Society's Annual Ride For Research - my first organized ride. Raising money for Brain Tumor Research seemed like a way to fight back - a way to contribute. A way of doing something. Amidst the worry and stress of Lisa's diagnosis and recovery from treatments - raising 2 children and embracing a new role as caregiver - cycling was and is, a therapeutic escape, it helps in coping with the reality that Lisa was dealt a severly tough hand. Our entire family had. I've ridden over 200,000 miles since 1998. The bike is a way to ride away from worries, then ride back to them with an improved energy and attitude.
This year I will again, honor my Pop, Jozsef Bukkhegyi. He fought Liver Cancer - I was lucky to have had him as my dad. It broke my hearts to say goodbye. Also - my friend Ed Walsh waits for us on the other side . My neighbor, Mona Bishlawi and I saw one another thousands of mornings. She'd be running, walking, riding - smiling. She was one of the most graceful souls I've ever known, positive and full of light. . I lost so many client/friends this past year to cancer. My friend Ted fought so hard. This was not his plan. Its left a very large void in my life. Pete joined Daisy and Barb. An unimaginable thing, loosing Pete Locke.
Our challenges have increased tho we remain grateful for what we have - trying to not focus on what we cannot control. I lost my dear friend Roman to cancer early in '21. With all of the challenges and recent covid paranoia and changes, it would easy to bail on PMC this year. Its not that convenient. The reality is, there is not a single real reason to sit-out on the cause. Cancer isn't F'n convenient. 2024 saw more people fighting. '25 again. As many as it takes, we are here.
As Lisa's health improved I stayed on the bike to manage my stress and well-being. Lisa is in her 27th year as a survivor. She is the bravest and most gracious person I'll ever know. She has accomplished things that science said she'would not do. 2024 was not without challenges and a major transition, but we persevere. Lisa has fight and resolve imbedded in her DNA. We are full of gratitude for the time that was granted. We know, we all know that Cancer will one day be gone.
This year I dedicate my labor of love to again Ted Landers, and Pete Locke. And to Lisa who has percerviered for 27 + years-
My bikes all have a Ride Like Ted sticker on them.
I Ride with Team Daisy. Daisy Locke was a lovely 28 year old girl who had battled cancer for a large part of her life. Her dad Pete assembled Team Daisy. A Team of about 60 riders - friends that have come together for a larger purpose. We enjoy the PMC immensely, the riding, the comeraderie...the *knowing* each of us have been effected. It is a unique group of wonderful people. Its the knowing that motivates us to commit in January each year.
