On August 5th and 6th, I will be bicycling in my 38th consecutive Pan-Massachusetts Challenge (PMC), and every year I really do look forward to riding 192 hilly miles from Sturbridge to Provincetown. Why? Because as Bob Kraft wrote in his letter thanking me for being a part of his PMC Patriots Platelet Pedaler team, “Our organization is so touched that you have chosen to make it a priority to join us in this mission to ride in the largest charity bicycling event in the country, to bring hope into our world for those who are fighting in the battle to eradicate cancer.”
People ask me why I still ride. If there is a one-word to answer that question, it is HOPE. We ride for those who can’t ride and to give hope to those fighting cancer.
Last year, thanks to my very generous donors, I personally raised $37,281.50 toward the grand total that 5,500 riders raised - $69 million! (That’s more than 60% of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue!)
This year, our goal is $70 million, and once again this year, 100% of the rider raised funds will go directly to Dana-Farber to support lifesaving cancer research and care!!! And as always, all of the money I earn teaching tennis this summer will be donated to the Jimmy Fund.
As usual our training started in chilly mid-April. At that time my daughter Laura, our good friend Kathleen, and I rode our bicycles 15 to 20 miles wearing many, many layers of clothes. Now as the weather is (finally) warming up, we ride 20 miles of hills (on Wednesdays), and 80+ miles on the weekends.
Here we are at the Cape Cod Canal recently.
Both mornings of the ride, I will be reading the names of the over 250 people for whom I am riding: those who have conquered cancer, those fighting cancer and those in whose memory I ride. If you have a new special someone’s name that you would like to add to my list, please let me know either by calling or texting me at 781-956-2042 or emailing me at dolly.bicknell@gmail.com.
If you chose to donate, please either send me a check made out to “PMC-Jimmy Fund” in the enclosed envelope, or go to PMC.org and donate there. My Rider ID# is DB0006. Or search for me under Dolly Bicknell.
Thank you for helping to cure cancer!
