I am now into my 7th decade, and plan to ride again this year as long as my health allows. Emma is now a full-fledged teenager, exhibiting many of the traits characteristic of nearly 15 year olds, delighting and exasperating at the same time. Short years ago we could not have imagined either milestone, yet here we are, ready and eager. As long as she perseveres, so will I. For the last nearly 13 years my granddaughter, Emma, has been on some type of chemotherapy almost continually. The different protocols have various side effects: thinning hair, nausea,, vomiting, fatigue, inhibited growth, compromised balance....and a host of others. She has been off chemo for quite a while now. Soon she will face a number of significant challenges, brought on by the long-term chemo. This is terrifying to all of us, and so we are trying not to fear when there is no chemo happening, even though it impacts the quality of her life, and waiting for tests to determine the next protocol, feels like we are tottering on the edge. We rejoiced as we witnessed her increasing stamina, appetite and ability to push buttons, all very normal things. Now her appetite comes and goes, as does her stamina. She is presently transfusion-dependent.
Emma, however, lets almost none of these side effects bother her. She is used to all of these nuisances, and simply ignores them when possible. She participates in Destination Imagination, recently returning from "Globals" in Knoxville, TN, because her team qualified by placing first in the state competition. She also is active in a national volunteer organization, and theater performances at the Palace Theater in Manchester, NH ( she wowed us all with her comedic interpretation of Pooh's tummy, a separate character!), Abu in "Alladin, and her poignant performance of "Nothing" from "A Chorus Line" at her school's talent show. She belongs to the percussion group of her school's band, and select and regular chorus. No one is more enthusiastic, or happier than she when she is on stage. Her smile lights up her face, and her face lights up everything around her! She is such an inspiration to all of us as she embraces her life and deals with its challenges. When her "counts" drop as a side effect of the chemo, she becomes lethargic, and just feels lousy, but she accepts this as part of who she is, curls up, naps, and rises with renewed determination. Emma rarely indulges in a pity party...how refreshing is that?
I have survived various bouts with cancer, including prostate and mesenteric, plus varioius types of skin cancer.. Sadly, my younger brother, John, was not as lucky. Diagnosed in late October, 2013, he died mid-January, 2014, from a very aggressive brain tumor. All of these are factors in my decision to ride again. I ride with hope in my heart that a cure will emerge from the research Team Emma is helping to fund. I ride because there is little else I can do to help my beautiful Emma Boo. I ride because I want to help other children and their families, so they will not have to experience the fear and uncertainty that my daughter, her husband , and son, Owen, do. I ride so maybe someone else won't have to stand helplessly by, watching a younger sibling lose speech and mobility and eventually life itself. I am the oldest member of Team Emma, and proudly pedal the route to Bourne, feeling like at least I am trying to do something to help. I hope that you, too, will recognize that Emma and other children with low grade tumors need our help if a cure is to be found. 100% of all monies Team Emma’s Enchantment raises goes directly and specifically to this research at Dana Farber. Please help me help my precious, courageous granddaughter have the quality of life she so deserves.
So I am going to ride again this year, as a cancer survivor and a dedicated grandfather. I want to be a part of the solution. We all need to help support the people who have the knowledge, talent and motiviation to find a cure. I have been drawn into the PMC by my children and their spouses and their children. Emma will draw the winner of my amazing vacation raffle: a luxury two bedroom condo anywhere in the world that RCI (the condo association) has availability. You have until July, 2018, to book your vacation, and I will pay the exchange and guest fees. You will only need to provide airfare if you choose a location requiring flights. If you are purchasing one of the only 200 raffle tickets I will sell, please send your checks to me made out to PMC 2016. I will acknowledge receipt and send you a ticket, or if you make an online donation in any multiple of $50, I will send your the raffle tickets. Don't forget to include your phone # as Emma will call the winner immediately. Last year's winner initially hung up on her because she thought Emma was selling timeshares! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, deeply and sincerely.

Thank you so much for reading why I ride, and understanding how we all have to help our children. FYI: the first year's winners, Bob and Carol Myatt of Rochester, MA, went to Florida for a week one April. Jan and Henry Scipione of York, Maine, took an incredible vacation to Kauai one July .Peter and Barbara Keohane of Hampton, NH, spent their school Feb. vacation week skiing in Ashland NH. Kay Morgan of Durham, NH, and her son headed to Sedona in 2013 for their April school vacation. Marilyn and Roy Bunting of Stratham, NH, spent the week of Memorial Day, 2014, on the coast of Maine! Last year's winner, Catherine Lacroix, will vacation with her husband Chris, and recent addition, Avery, at a NH resort in June! Your name could be here next year, describing where you dreamed of going one day....
