Dear Friends,
I am training for my seventh Pan-Mass Challenge, riding again with the Year Up team. Since 1980, the PMC has raised over $900 million for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. One hundred percent of all rider-raised funds go directly to cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund. The PMC is Dana-Farber’s single largest supporter. Since 2009, the Year Up team has raised $6,949,421.
Once again, I am riding to honor a dear family friend, Dmitri Itzkovitz. The money I raise through the PMC will support the Dmitri Itzkovitz Pediatric Brain Tumor Research Fund. Since 2015, our team has contributed to this fund and helped to fund the TAK580 clinical trial. The trial was extremely successful: it shrunk the brain tumors of children we know and love. TAK580, now called Ojemda, has received FDA approval: it’s the first-ever FDA-approved therapy developed to target the most common pediatric brain tumor—the same tumor that Dmitri.
It is hard to convey the significance of this FDA approval. Despite the many developments in cancer research and the treatment landscape since the 1970s, none of the therapies applied to children’s brain tumors. Few academic researchers and no biotech companies were taking this on in a meaningful way. Along with four other PMC teams supporting pediatric brain tumor research, we helped build Dana Farber’s now-thriving pediatric brain tumor research program: top researchers joined the cause, prioritizing work that would help sick children as soon as possible. Clinical trials for TAK580 and several other compounds were a direct result of our team’s fundraising.
Please donate to my 165-mile ride by clicking one of the following links or by sending a check made out to Pan-Mass Challenge to me at my office address at the end of this email. I am hoping to raise $30,000 this year and would appreciate your contributions. I hope you are having a good summer.
Thank you for your help!
Best,
Charles
