What a bike was meant to do....
June 6, 2016
Riding in the PMC has been an honor. It changes you in ways you don’t even realize.
Last week a friend of mine checked in to Room 54, Pod 54, of the Tower. The Tower is a unit at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston for patients undergoing intensive chemotherapy. She will be there a minimum of 4 weeks. And she is too sick to have visitors. Her cancer was discovered when she went to the doctor for a completely different reason.
When I first sat down to write about why I am riding I was planning to start off by saying that this year I’m riding in the Pan-Mass Challenge with my team in memory of Jim McCarthy, one of the members of the Seacoast Young Team, who died October 22, 2015. Jim was a successful businessman, all around athlete, sailor, cyclist, and just a really good guy. The last person you would expect to see die within a year of being diagnosed with the cancer that killed him.
My friend in The Tower doesn’t have a very good prognosis. I’m guessing you’ve known someone in a similar situation. Perhaps that’s why you decided to sponsor me in years past. Because once you have lost someone – a friend or family member – it changes your perspective on things. Many things if you stop to think about it. I’ve certainly stopped whining (“shut up legs” on long hill climbs is about the extent of it….).
And so I’m riding my 14th time in the PMC and once again asking you to sponsor my ride. Because some day the cancer that is treated by the money we have raised through the PMC may just save the life of someone you love. I have to think it will. And now you understand why I have chosen this opportunity.
There is a link to my eGift page right here if you would like to contribute online. If you would like to mail me a check just make it out to PMC/Jimmy Fund and mail it to me at 1759 Victoria Circle, Vero Beach, FLA 32967
All the very best,
Carol
