Cancer has a way of stopping time, of halting normal life and inciting fear and uncertainty to those around it. In my lifetime, my family has had limited contact with this disease, a fact that I am more grateful for every day. Each year seems to bring a new story, a new name; a close friend with a scary diagnosis, a parent with a hopeful prognosis but long road for recovery, a friend dealing with the anxiety of waiting for a biopsy result, a coworker gone way too soon.
This August, I’m committed to ride 163 miles from Wellesley to Provincetown in the 2016 Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), an annual two-day bike ride that raises money for research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) in Boston. Last year alone, PMC riders raised $45 million, 100% of every dollar directly benefitting cancer research.
My dear family friend is in the midst of a very hard fight. Luckily, he is in the hands of Dana Farber, where I know he is getting the best treatment available. He has been a constant and steadfast provider of support, humor and strength to me over the years, and I am honored to be able to support him and to ride in his honor this year.
I am also so lucky to have been welcomed into the Dana family, a group that has taught me about grace and gratitude in the face of the loss of their father, a loss I couldn’t imagine going through. Greg’s initial prognosis of 6-9 months was extended to 3 years with quality time thanks to his world-class care team at DFCI. The Dana's have also taught me everything I know about cycling and I am looking forward to riding with Evan, Marcia and Abby this year.
I am unlikely to discover the cure... but what I can do is ride, and I ask for your support. I have made the commitment to raise $7,500. I ride with gratitude for the health of my family, with strength for those fighting this disease, and with hope for the future. Your donation brings us closer by the mile.
Please share your stories, or the names of those you’d like to dedicate your donation to. I will be proud to wear their names throughout the PMC.
If your company has a matching gift program, please contact your HR department and follow the process for a matching donation. Your donation is tax deductible and 100% will go to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. If you prefer to give via check, please contact me directly.
