UPDATE: Thanks to my amazingly supportive friends and family, we surpassed my initial goal of $7,500, in under 4 days of fundraising! I'm now working toward my stretch goal of $11,600, which would put us at the top 10% of all riders!
Why I Ride...
I am not a bike rider.
My experience probably amounts to a handful of spin classes, pursued only when my other exercise options become too routine, and never exactly willingly. I've never ridden more than 17 miles at once, and my only bike-related expense in the past ten years was a city-bike membership.
I don't even (yet) own a bike.
It goes without saying: I'm unprepared. But, that's why I'm doing it. Because none of the over 1.5 million Americans who are diagnosed with cancer each year are prepared for the way their lives and the lives of their family get turned completely upside down by their diagnosis. None of the 33% of men and women who will be diagnosed at some point in their lifetimes have any chance to prepare for the effects of cancer treatments, chemotherapies, and radiation. And none of the loved ones of those with cancer are ever prepared for the fear, sadness, and pain that lies ahead of them. And they still push on.
There's not a person in this country who hasn't been affected by cancer: whether it's my former boss, Amy, who, even while fighting a debilitating AML diagnosis still never stopped fighting to inspire the youth in her community; whether it's my friend's beloved mother, Andrea, who cancer took away before I had the privilege of meeting, but whose love for her son and his fiance (my best friend) continues to wrap their lives and home in its warmth and kindness; whether it's my friend, Saranne, who, in the midst of a horrific Stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis, spread not fear but laughter by creating a national non-profit, Comedy Cures, dedicating to improving the quality of life for other cancer patients and their families.
Or whether it's your friends or families, who are forced to face an unexpected, completely unfair cancer diagnosis.
Unlike our loved ones who were caught blind-sided by cancer, I can prepare for my challenge by training. And every mile I ride - and every dollar I raise - will, I hope, help prepare the medical field to beat cancer, once and for all.
I am so grateful for the consideration of a donation. And if it is in honor of a loved one who has fought cancer and you would like to, please share his/her name in the notes section. I will bring the names with me to the race, add their stories to this page, and ride for them as well.
100% of donations to my ride will go to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure.
Thank you!!
