Me: I just signed up to do the Pan-Mass Challenge in August where I ride my bike the entire length of Cape Cod - 77 miles from Bourne to Provincetown. And I am going to raise $6,000 where 100% of rider-raised donations go directly to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure.
Wyatt (age 9): $6,000! That’s a lot of money.... (pause.. thinking). So you need 600 people to donate $10.
Me: Yes, that’s right. Hmm, that’s a lot of people. I probably know 600 people. Or maybe I know 240 people who will donate $25. Or 120 people who will donate $50. Or 60 people who will donate $100. Now it doesn’t sound so hard.
Wyatt: I’ll give you $10.
Me: Thank you buddy! And you know what? For every person who donates, they can recommend a song to add to my playlist to listen while I ride. Do you have a song you want me to hear while I ride?
Wyatt: Viva La Vida!
Me: That means Long Live Life in Spanish. Perfect choice! I'll be thinking of you when it comes on. Now I have to go dust off my bike (literally, it’s covered in cobwebs). But I am really excited to get back out on my bike and support this great cause. I’m rinding for Auntie Lyn who is 7 years cancer-free! And to those I have lost to cancer: my father (colon cancer), my grandfather (leukemia), and my uncle Ed (leukemia). I hope my friends are as generous as you.
