Freinds and colleagues,
19 years! Yes, that’s how long I’ve been riding the Pan Mass Challenge. Sometimes it’s hard to comprehend. I’ve done this through Covid, a total knee replacement, my wife’s battle with cancer and raising two wonderful children. During this time, I’ve seen countless friends, family and colleagues wage their wars with cancer. Why do I keep riding? Because I still can and in the hopes of finding cures and better treatments for cancer.
On Saturday, August 6, along with some 6,000 cyclists, I will set off for the nearly 200-mile 2022 PMC bike ride from Sturbridge to Provincetown. It truly is one of the best weekends of the year. I’ll experience an incredible range of emotions as I hear inspiring stories from survivors and heart-wrenching tales of family members and friends young and old lost to cancer. For all of us riding plus the thousands of volunteers supporting the ride, we share a common belief that what we are doing will bring us steps closer to cures and better treatments.
Last year, with your incredible help and generosity, we raised $33,625 as part of the $64 million raised by the 2021 PMC. This year’s goal is an astounding $66 million. My personal goal is $30,000. My brother, sister and I have committed to contribute half of this goal.
As I do each year, I ride in honor and memory of your family, friends and colleagues. I ride for our Pedal Partners, some having survived and others not. This year, I will ride for my friend Tony, recently diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer. I ride for my PMC teammate Jeff, a 3-year survivor. As always, I ride for my brother, Chris, who lost his battle and my wife, Beth, now a survivor of 10+ years who still deals with the side effects of her treatments and worries about what news the next doctor visit will bring.
The PMC raises more money than any other single athletic fundraising event in the country. Since 1980, the PMC has donated $831 million to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to Dana-Farber, accounting for over half of the annual revenue at The Jimmy Fund. And hot off the press, Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s was just named the top pediatric cancer program in the country in US News & World Report’s 2022-23 Best Children’s Hospitals report.
Please join me by making a tax-free donation. Don’t forget that your employer may have a matching program that can increase the size of your donation.
Thanks to all of you who have been with me over the years. And a big thanks to all of you first time donors!
Bob
