"If you want to go fast, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together."
There are moments in all of our lives where we have the opportunity to make a real difference. On August 2nd - 4th, I will be the first person to attempt to RUN the entire 163-mile Pan-Mass Challenge, which is a two-day charity bike event across Massachusetts that draws 5,500 cyclists each year and has raised $375 million over the past 33 years for cancer research. Yes, as a RUNNER, not a cyclist.
Why am I running? In reflecting on the tragic events of the Boston Marathon, I had the idea to do something as a tribute to the victims of Boston, to honor runners worldwide and the opportunity to raise money for vital cancer research. 100% of your donations go to help the doctors and researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute with the necessary resources to discover cures for cancers. Sadly, cancer has impacted too many families and the work at Dana-Farber is critical in battling this dreaded disease.
163 miles is definitely a long, long way to run and is much further than I have ever attempted. I anticipate running all day and night for two straight days. Thinking back a year ago, when I was 50 pounds heavier and couldn't run a mile without stopping, this would have seemed like an impossible goal. Today, after changing my diet and logging hundreds and hundreds of miles training, it is still a daunting goal, but doable.
What started so innocently as an idea to run the Pan-Mass Challenge in order to raise money for a great cause, has grown over the past few months into something so much bigger than me. I have been completely humbled by the support, well-wishes and donations from so many people. As the African proverb says, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." Please kindly consider spreading the word, joining our cause and making a donation so that together, we can run far to beat cancer. I know that with your support, we will be successful. That's Why We Run. Thank you!
