Why I Ride ...
Last year, I was introduced to Team Perry though my friend Marci Blacker. This team was founded in tribute to the late Perry Levy, the first husband of one of Marci's dear friends, Melissa. He was only 32 when he lost his battle with cancer. Every year, this group trains together, rides together, and raises money together in his honor. All of the funds raised by Team Perry go toward the Perry S. Levy Fund for Gastrointestinal Cancer Research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The fundraising by this team has been enough to provide for the sponsorship of a Fellow at the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center there, and the funds we raise go directly toward supporting his salary and research.
The energy and devotion of the members of Team Perry has inspired me to do something to help make a difference. As most of you know, I'm already a pretty active person. I participate in half- and full-marathon road races, 200 mile overnight relay races, and (most recently) triathlons. Friends and family and even complete strangers will often ask what the registration money goes toward (because why would someone want to do these crazy things without a good cause behind them?). Unfortunately though, the answer is usually that it doesn't go toward any good cause. In comes the Pan Mass Challenge. The PMC is completely different. It's not a race, for starters. It's an overwhelmingly large charitable event. An event in which I'll be biking 84 miles on August 4th. An event in which the only "winners" to speak of are the Jimmy Fund, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the cancer patients they will and already do support. All of the funds raised by individuals and teams for this event go directly toward cancer care and research at these institutions. ALL of the funds. Every single penny. Now THIS something that I'm proud to be a part of. The unfortunate reality that everyone has been or will be affected by cancer during their lifetime, whether directly or indirectly. Though this ride and this event, we hope to help supplement the funding and the resources that will comfort individuals already affected, and to ultimately help find a cure.
My goal for fundraising is $3100. It's a bit daunting, to say the least. But I'd love to participate in this event and need to raise these funds to do so. Please help me reach my goal -- and make your own contribution! -- in the fight against cancer. No amount is too small. Any donation can and will make a difference.
There's a lot riding on this.
I can't thank you enough.
Love,
Alissa
