On August 3-4, 2024, I will once again be taking part in the 44th Pan-Mass Challenge 161-mile ride in an effort to provide Dana-Farber's doctors and researchers with the necessary resources and funds to discover cures for all types of cancer. The PMC has raised over $972 million for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute since it's launch in 1980. Today, the PMC is the single largest contributor to Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund and is responsible for 62% of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue.
The decision to take on such a demanding challenge was an easy one. To the left is a photo of my father, Charles “Chuck” Deardorff, taken in August 1988. That summer, my father enrolled himself in a week-long hockey fantasy camp hosted by his beloved 1974-75 Philadelphia Flyers. At the age of 53, he soon came to the realization that he might not last a day, let alone a week, on the ice alongside these NHL legends. This photo was taken on the last day of camp. With his trademark determination and tireless spirit, he had made it. Today, this picture of my father hangs proudly in my home and is admired often by his grandson, Charlie.
Cancer robbed my family of the opportunity for my father and son to meet, but not the opportunity for me to share the countless stories and memories I have of my father with my son. Although he lost his battle with cancer in 2005, my father continues to be my greatest source of inspiration. That is why I dedicate this ride, and all rides, to him. Please take a moment to donate to this wonderful cause. Any contribution, no matter the size, is greatly appreciated. 100% of rider-raised revenue will go directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's commitment to finding a cure.
Thank you for your support!
