I’m riding the Pan Mass Challenge for the 19th straight year. Hard to believe, but my achy body is telling me it's true! I’m a bit late in sending my annual plea, so forgive me, but we do have great news to report from the FDA. A pediatric brain tumor drug discovered at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the lab we specifically fund was just approved by the FDA for wide-scale distribution. The drug company DayOne Pharmaceuticals was founded by a former member of Dana Farber’s advisory board, who took the compound and research from our lab and led the final stages of commercialization. This drug will change the standard of care for a meaningful subset of pediatric brain tumor patients and inevitably save lives (and be safer / less toxic along the way).
To be clear, this could not have happened without the PMC and riding teams like ours. Much of the funding for the research that led to its discovery and paid for the first clinical trials to prove efficacy was raised through the PMC by our team, The Bikers Dozen, and others who direct their funds to the Pediatric research program at the DFCI. I had referenced our pedal partner, Sabine, last year as the 9-year-old dynamo who had been suffering from leukemia for the past several years. We met with Sabine and her family in the spring, and they were ecstatic to share that she is now officially in remission!! Her treatment at Dana Farber made all the difference. Meeting children like Sabine and the many we’ve met through our PMC efforts is, at times, deeply sad, but this particular story is incredibly motivating. The spirit and incredible fight that they all display is truly inspiring.
I come to you each year to ask you to join me in this necessary effort, and I’m writing this letter to ask you once again to join the fight. So many strides have been made in the research we are helping to fund. I urge you to continue your support of the critical fundraising and focused effort to continue this extraordinary battle. Our team has raised over $4.2M in the past 18 years, but the need for these funds has never been more important. We’re so close!
Thank you!
Andy
