TOO MANY HEROES
Dear Family and Friends,
We are back! Like everyone, we’re SO EXCITED about getting to “normal” again. For us that means the Cape and the PMC. On August 7th and 8th we’re riding the Pan-Mass Challenge. For those of you not familiar, the PMC is an annual bike-a-thon that raises money for cancer research and care at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. In fact, it raises more money for charity than any single athletic fundraising event in the country, mainly because 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to the cause! The ride itself is a two-day, 192-mile trek across the state of Massachusetts from Sturbridge to Provincetown. This is the 42nd annual PMC.
So many of you have helped us every year and might remember that each year we find a special reason to ride and some special heroes. This year, we have way too many heroes:
-Our superhero is our sister-in-law, Debbie. She is fighting her latest (and 4th) challenge together with my big brother, Bill. She is an 18-year fighter and winner.
-Our friend (and travel buddy from a Holy Cross Sicily trip), Lynne, is our newest hero. She is fighting hard and winning her battle.
-My brother, Jim, is keeping an eye on some serious skin cancer and now keeping tabs on some early prostate issues.
-Our friend, Allan (and his wife, Ellen, - two long time loyal and generous PMC supporters) are working together to beat his challenge.
-Most recently, another newest hero and dear friend, Bob P is leading his family in his difficult fight.
The silver lining is the inspiration, courage, positive attitude, and determination they all share. They are getting great care and support. We so want to help each of them get through their challenges. I don’t know what to do to help….so I ride, and thanks to all of you, raise $ for the PMC.
This year’s crew has a big Amanti presence! Susan’s cousin David (Amanti) and I will be trying to keep up with David’s sons Jeff and Nick and hoping his daughter Brittney slows down for us at the finish line. Britt was our hero in 2018 (along with Debbie) She is one of many PMC “Living Proof” riders. (Living Proof riders are either currently undergoing cancer treatment or are survivors.) We are also part of Team Perry, a team whose fundraising efforts go directly to the Perry S. Levy Fellowship for Gastrointestinal Research. Perry passed away in 1999 at the age of 32 after a short and courageous battle with cancer of the small bowel. Perry’s wife and his parents have made this a wonderful and successful tradition in their family.
The PMC is a family affair for us, and I could not even consider riding without their help. Each year, Nana is at the Cape cooking pounds and pounds of chicken cutlets – Andrew is available if Nana has any questions on the menu via Zoom, Dana and Kelsey are volunteering again, while Susan and Uncle Dick are taking care of all of us and chasing me around the Cape.
Your donation is tax deductible, and any amount will be greatly appreciated! For easy on-line giving, please visit either pmc.org/egifts/RH0129 or please send a check payable to “PMC Jimmy Fund” and mail to:
