Why I Ride ...
Welcome to the profile page for our team, Emma's Army - fueled by Faith.
We are a group of people united with a common purpose that is simple, yet massive in scope: Remove Cancer from this World!
Each summer, this team comes together and rides as one during that first weekend in August. While the personal motivation of our riders are numerous, we were created, are formed, and continue to be motivated by the power of two amazing women....Faith Monroe, and the late Emma Keenan. Read on for their stories....
Faith is the 'pedal partner' for our PMC team. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the Fall of 2005, and continues her courageous battle with Cancer. Much of the life-saving treatment that Faith has received has been at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Faith enjoys playing her electric guitar, sewing, and knitting. Faith is an avid reader and enjoys training her dog Tigger. Faith's courage, positive outlook and infectious smile continue to be an inspiration to us all.
Emma Keenan lost a brutal battle with lung cancer on August 18, 1994.
Emma was diagnosed with small oat-cell lung cancer in July of 1990 and given a prognosis of 90 days. At a mere 52 years of age, this stunned her entire family. They were all devastated. It was Emma's irrevocable will to fight that lifted the Keenan family out of the blues and into a full-court press against her disease. She battled through reprehensible chemotherapy and radiation treatments for over six months. She lost her hair but not any weight -- thanks to her beloved hot-fudge sundaes with nuts and extra fudge! Her immutable positive attitude together with her treatments put her into remission for about three years, during which she traveled and lived life with all of her Italian flare and passion. She attended her oldest son's graduation from USC, her youngest son's wedding, and her daughter's ob/gyn visit to verify her pregnancy. Although she was always a grand mother, she was elated to find out that she was a grandmother!
Emma had a relapse that would be the beginning of the end after her son John's wedding in June of 1994. The last few months are why her family, including her two cycling son's hate cancer with all of their might. She endured an array of devastating treatments, including more toxic chemotherapy and radiation to her brain. At the end, she passed on at her home, surrounded by the family that she so lovingly dedicated her life to. Ultimately, she did lose her battle with lung cancer, but her love of life extended her life 1,410 days beyond the doctor's original prognosis! We all wish she were here to hug and baby-sit her now five grandchildren.
Our team has too many stories like Emma's and Faith's that is our motivation to participate in this event until a cure exists. We wish we did not have to write this story, raise this money, or ride this ride, but we do. With your support, our mission WILL be accomplished one day, and it is with that day in mind that the Army pedals on!
We thank all of you for your support!
