In 2003, Mike Mahler rode his first Pan Mass Challenge in honor of his son, who was treated for a rare form of cancer the year before. His spouse, Renee, also volunteered as a Massage Therapist to help support the thousand or so riders that year.

In 2004, with his son doing very well, Mike and his family wanted to support families undergoing cancer treatment. Upon discovering the recently started PMC Pedal Partner program, Mike founded a new team to help these families and target funds toward research into the pediatric cancers these brave children were fighting. Team LEGS - LEGS Ending Great Suffering (LEGS on Facebook) was created and matched with our first Pedal Partner - Jake Boudreau! Jake was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, and Mike reached out to Mike and Denyse Dodd (Team Friends For Life) to find out if it would be possible to support research into neuroblastoma, which the Dodd family supports through their PMC team. Not only did all LEGS riders agree to support this fund, Jake's parents and friends also rode with Team LEGS that year! Mike's children also rode in the PMC Kids ride in Medfield (the first of its kind) with Jake and his sister, Hannah! Jake would be a LEGS Pedal Partner and PMC Kids Ride champion (leading the PMC Shrewsbury/Boylston ride!) from 2004-2007. Jake fought an incredibly courageous battle against his disease until 2010. Our goal is to ensure as much as possible that families do not have to endure this unimaginable pain.
