I'm a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading a charge to beat cancer. 100% of rider-raised revenue goes directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure.
I always wanted to ride the PMC and shamefully, it was not until my family was faced with the horrible reality of Olivia getting cancer that I decided it was time. This will be my 8th year riding this PMC for my hero who inspires me every single day; my sweet, brave daughter Olivia. I am riding for all the friends Liv made who fought for their lives just like our baby girl did. I am riding for all the other cancer parents that have become life long friends and were an amazing support to Christine and I as we all had to endure the pain of watching our babies suffer, yet we were able to lean on each other and do it together. And I am riding for my other 3 kids who rallied around Liv and have always been her biggest supporters. They took a step back and let us focus on Liv when she need]ed us most. They too are heroes in this.
On June 15th, 2015, just 1 day after Olivia turned 2 years old, our world as we knew it came crashing down around us. Hearing the words I'm sorry but Olivia has cancer is something no one could have ever prepared us for, and a pain that is unexplainable. There was no way Christine and I could protect Liv from what was to com. What we witnessed our little girl endure was nothing short of horrifying. Yet, though it all her spirit, her hope, her faith, and her innocence never wavered. She faced each day with the most amazing fight. She is strong, and she earned her nickname Brave Livy. That nickname started the first night in Children's hospital. Liv needed an IV put in both arms. One arm was for the blood and platelet transfusions she needed for a few days to stabilize her before she was even able to start treatment. The other arm was for IV fluids as well as medication. After 4 pokes in 1 arm (as Christine and I had to our our tiny girl down on the table and watch the horror in her eyes when she didn't understand why we were letting them hurt her) they got the first IV. The second arm they poked her 6 times and could not get the IV in. She looked up at Christine with tears pouring down her face and said I'm trying to be brave Mommy. The nurse said you are so brave Livy. Finally, after 8 pokes they placed the second IV. That night as Liv was sleeping in her crib that amazing nurse came and decorated the hospital room with balloons and left gifts that said you are my hero Brave Livy. From that moment on... she became Brave Livy.
For 5 years Liv was a pedal partner for the PMC. Pedal partners are kids with/ have had cancer who are partnered with a team riding the PMC. It was such an amazing experience for our whole family! The emotions Christine and I felt that weekend the first year were overwhelming. It was so inspiring! I knew that weekend that I had to become part of the PMC family. I do this for my baby girl and all the other kids like her. I am so honored to be riding the PMC again this year with Team Path to the Cure! I was invited four years ago to join this team by one of its members, and a man who has become part of our family. A man that Christine and I will forever be so grateful for, and never be able to thank enough. I will be riding with the head of Liv's medical team, her amazing oncologist Dr. Andrew Place. To ride along side and share this experience with the man who saved our daughter is such an honor.
With the grace of God and the help of the doctors, nurses, volunteers, Children's Hospital and The Jimmy Fund our seet Olivia is now cancer free, and we pray she stays that way!!!! we feel so blessed every day and it is our mission to help every other familysuffering the way our family did.
