Dear friends,
This summer I’ll have the privilege of doing one of my favorite activities to help cure one of the world’s most pervasive and threatening diseases. Along with 6,000 other cyclists, I’ll be biking 200 miles across my new home state of Massachusetts on August 5-6 as part of the 2017 Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC). Founded in 1980, the PMC is now the largest athletic fundraiser in the country and has raised a total of $500 million for cancer treatment and research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. (Now that’s what I call “cycling with soul….”)
Cancer brings with it a sense of fear and loss, but also a sense of optimism. It’s a disease that has undoubtedly already touched your lives in one way or another, just like it has mine. But it’s also an illness whose cure, I believe, is in sight—maybe even in our lifetimes. I’ll never be a doctor or a scientist who can participate hands-on in finding a cure, but the PMC is the best way I can think of to join the fight (“feet-on”?).
I’m lucky enough to be riding with a big team organized by my brother-in-law Ben Cornell’s family and friends. These all-stars have been doing the PMC for 27 years and have graciously welcomed me AND my dad, Tony, to their team, “Fat Boys / Slim Sisters” (still figuring out the origins of the name). My dad and I did an 80-miler a few years ago, and I did a century (100-mile) ride on Long Island, but we’re pretty certain the Cornells can fire us up to double our PR.
With their support on the cycling end, I would love to get your support on the fundraising end. I’ve committed to raising $5,000, and I would be honored if you could contribute towards that goal in any amount. One of the coolest things about the PMC is that 100% of rider-raised revenue goes straight to the Jimmy Fund. And as you would expect, it’s tax-free.
To sweeten the deal and entice you a little bit further, I have also committed to do the following for anyone who donates:
- Host you at my St. Patrick’s Day fundraising party on Friday, March 17 at my apartment (save the date!)
- Write you a personalized haiku
- Accompany you to any spin class in Boston between now and August 5, or on a Saturday ride through some exciting part of the greater Boston area
- Never run a marathon (this will be the only athletic fundraiser for this girl)
Thank you, all, for being my friends and making my life so full. I appreciate your considering this cause, and I hope I can return the favor someday.
Yours,
Giuliana
