Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Partners -
For us this is personal. Each of us rides for a different reason. Perhaps cancer has touched a spouse, parent, child or another family member or friend. Or perhaps we just want to make a difference. Our reasons are individual, but together we ride as a team. And we intend to make a real, material difference. The 11 of us have collectively committed to raising more than $66,000 for cancer research. We hope you will join us and make a contribution, however small. Note that each and every penny we raise goes to fund cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Our team is led by Jerome Dubois, a 20-year veteran of the Pan-Mass Challenge. Other members include Chris Lingamfelter, Gillan Hawkes, Rob Sedor, Andrew Fink, Eric Waldow, David Vallance, Scott Macbeth, Eric Montague, Sofia Leav, and Katie Neil. The ride will take place on August 6th and August 7th, with day one from Wellesley to Bourne (85 miles) and day two from Bourne to the tip of Cape Cod in Provincetown, Massachusetts (78 miles). We'll join about 6,000 other riders in an endurance contest that has come to become the largest sports-centered fundraiser in the United States. Over the past 40 years the pan mass challenge has contributed over $767 million to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, which uses those funds for cancer research and treatment.
You can read why each of us is riding in our own words below:
Jerome
I’ve completed the PMC each year since 2003, this year will be 20 in a row. I used to dedicate rides to certain people impacted by cancer. I could have safely continued that pattern for a lot longer than my legs would have kept riding. But over the last few years, for me, the PMC has transformed from a somber event to a celebration of hope and dedication. The dollars we are raising ARE making a very real difference. We are helping someone’s mother, daughter, sister, aunt, or cousin, someone’s father, brother, son, or uncle. As we embarque on a return to normal from the previous years' PMCs, I look forward to more people lining the sides of the road to cheer us on - with a hot cup of Dunkin, a cow bell, or noise maker. And while the memory of those who died too young never leave us, it’s the energy from those cheering us on, many holding posters sharing their story, that drive me forward. This year, we will also be riding in memory of Dan Winkler, a true engine of positive energy.
Chris
2019 was for my niece Olivia. 2021 is for my Dad, Brown Lingamfelter. Through the last half century Dad has been my mentor, employer, friend, role model, and my rock. Last year he was diagnosed with MDS, sometimes called pre-Luekemia. This Spring it lived up to its name and progressed to Acute Leukemia. As I write this my Dad just finished his second round of chemotherapy. It is hard, watching him go for seven straight days to be injected with a poison, and then struggle to recover for the next three weeks, just to repeat the process. There is a terrible feeling of helplessness with nothing you can do, except be there and be supportive. My niece went through the same thing and conquered Leukemia and is now in full remission. I expect nothing less from my father. Thanks to folks like you I raised nearly $16,000 in 2019 for Dana Farber. I am hoping to top that this year. Please give and help us overcome this terrible disease.
Gillan
Chip is my darling brother with a big shit-eating grin, who cooks killer carnitas tacos and gives great bear hugs. He went to his high school Prom in blacktie - and of course the Chuck Taylors and a dangling feather earring. Classic.
In late 2021 he called me to tell me he has Stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer. Out of the blue - he's never smoked in his life; it's a one in a million genetic thing. His life was forever changed in ways I can only imagine, and mine will never be the same. I think about him and his family every single day, and am in awe of the strength and quiet determination he has to beat this thing, and make every day count with his beautiful wife Brooke, and kids, Charlie and Clara.
Chip is going through the fight of his life and I'm powerless to help him. Riding the PMC feels like some small thing I can do for him, and for so many others in his situation.
I will miss pedaling with my good friend, colleague and fellow Riv Rider Teammate Dan, who passed away earlier this year. Dan, I know you'll be out there with us...
Thank you so, so much for your support! It means so much for so many.
Rob
Most of you know I am outgoing, willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed, and fairly handy (see slack photos of me repairing Chucks on deployment). What you don't know is I inherited those fine traits as well as my name from my dad who lost his battle with colon cancer February 2nd, 2007, just 2 months prior to my 21st birthday. My dad loved robotics and cycling, which makes this ride and the support of 6RS that much more meaningful. Most, if not all of us, have had friends and family impacted by cancer and I'm grateful for the opportunity to participate in this event to help Dana Farber further advance cancer treatments and research to help find cures. On behalf of your 6 River Riders, my family, and the families this fundraising will affect, thank you!
Andrew
I am riding in honor of Dan Winkler. Dan tragically passed away in April while racing in his first Ironman 70.3 event. I had the pleasure of working with Dan the past two years. Dan is greatly missed. Dan was scheduled to ride the PMC this year and I am incredibly humbled to ride in his honor. I am riding the PMC to raise money to eradicate cancer AND I am riding PMC in honor of Dan and all that he represented.
Eric W.
I've known too many people who've been affected by cancer, and one is too many. This is a good event and a good cause.
David
I've committed to raise $6,000 to conquer cancer and ride the 2022 Pan-Mass challenge,162 miles over 2 days! I am raising donations in the hope that I will be able to say less often, I am sorry you have to go through this, and more often, congratulations on beating cancer! Too many family, friends and colleagues have been impacted by cancer over the years.
While I signed up in January to ride for a better future, I will now also be riding for my friend and colleague Dan Winkler. Before he passed away this spring, we had talked at length about riding the PMC together, providing me tips on how to have a successful ride. I know in spirit he will be leading all the way to Provincetown.100% of donations go to Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and have a real impact - the PMC raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country - $831 million since 1980 and a record $64 million last year alone! Every dollar helps, going towards: research, early detection, treatments… Thank you so much for your support in achieving my goal to help conquer cancer!
Scott
I’m a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading a charge to beat cancer. I ride because last year my family was faced with the uncertainty and fear of cancer. Thankfully, we had a good outcome, in no small part due to advances built on the generosity of donors supporting the research and treatment of cancer. So much progress has been made that it is clear to me that beating cancer is within our reach. Each year amazing scientists and doctors at organizations like the Dana-Farber Cancer institute chip away at this disease with the support of donations like those the PMC provides. In fact, last year 100% of rider-raised revenue went directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s tireless commitment to finding a cure. I humbly ask that you support them, and me, by donating to my ride as we continue to push to end cancer.
Eric M.
My grandfather 'Chuck' (yes, it's sometimes confusing we have robots by the same nickname) has been an amazing mechanical engineering mentor and I have a hard time imagining where I'd be without his insight. Thanks to amazing cancer research he has had multiple growths detected and removed when they were very small and he is still 'alive and kicking' as he says. I ride for the future of cancer research, for better treatment and prevention, and more happy outcomes.
Sofia
I’m riding for love, for health and for hope - for my friends and family and for anyone that needs it.
Katie
One life lost to cancer is one too many. I ride to fundraise for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the hopes that, in the future, the word cancer no longer has to be spoken. Additionally, I'm riding to honor those that have lost their lives to cancer and to celebrate those that are able to say they've beaten cancer (congratulations!).
Additionally, while I signed up to ride for PMC in late 2021, I'm now riding in the spirit of an incredible life that the 6 River family lost in 2022 -- Dan Winkler. Dan rode in the PMC in 2021, and I'm riding to represent Dan and his contagious spirit.
Thank you in advance for your encouragement and contributions.
