This is my ride for Sarah. Many of you know our daughter was diagnosed with young onset colon cancer at 32 years old in August 2015. Three months after her second son Caden was born Sarah called Dad, I have cancer. There was never any doubt we were going to Dana-Farber. After surgery, treatment started on the 7th floor of the Yawkee Building. Sarah ran many road races to fundraise for The Jimmy Fund. She said to me I never expected to be a patient here. Who does? I responded.
Sarah's a warrior. She's my inspiration! She's handled the surgeries, treatments, and the setbacks with unbelievable Grace and Grit. Despite the fear and sadness, her attitude was let's get after it! So I'm going to take on a bike ride that, let's be honest, I wouldn't (shouldn't) otherwise be attempting. I'll be 70 riding my 6th PMC with my amazing Team Crank teammates 187 miles over 2 days.
Thanks to an innovative clinical trial Sarah entered at Dana-Farber, today Sarah is 5 years cancer free! How can I ever repay that? Sarah's treatments were so successful she's run two Boston Marathons with the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge Team with two of my dearest friends Julie and Naitik! What's more remarkable is Sarah ran the Marathon after undergoing a right lung tumor recession that significantly reduced her breathing capacity!
It's absolutely amazing the advances being made in cancer diagnosis. Dana-Farber has the DNA profile of her cancer cells. There's a new test that uses a blood draw to seek out evidence of any of those cancer cells. Sarah's test was negative for any matches. She's well past 5 years cancer free!!
Everyone has been impacted by cancer. With your help, we'll continue to see the amazing advances being made to beat this awful disease. We still have far to go.
I ride in memory of family members we've lost. My Dad, Aunt Alice, cousins Larry and Deck, Elaine's husband Ronnie, uncles Johnny, Jimmy and Donald, and cousin Derek's wife Jill and Sarah's mother in law Sharon. I ride for family members who've survived, Joan, Betty, Brenda, Dennis, Cara and Geri S. I'm also riding for two family members undergoing treatment right now for colon cancer, Johnny B and Elaine. I ride for friends who've battled cancer, Greg S, Annie S, Kerry and Geno P, Mike L., Kathy H., and my DFMC survivors and their family members. I ride for friends we've lost. Nick T, Bonnie M, Arthur C, Ric S, Mike R, Lara D, Joe F., Carol S., Steve D., and little big man Matty D, only 7 years, and Joey, 3 and a half years old. I ride with hope and optimism for our's and your kids and grandkids.
This year all of my fundraising is going to support the critical, innovative early research supported by the Claudia Adams Barr Program. My riding team has applied for a very large matching grant this year from the Warren Alpert Foundation!!! So the impact of your donations is doubled!
Thank you for all your support,
Tim
