In April of 2022, I was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (also known as MDS). What that means is that there was something wrong with my stem cells. And stem cells play a critical part of blood production. The hematologist indicated that the only cure was a stem cell transplant. When asked where I wanted to get treated, I said "Being so close to Boston, there was only one place to go: Dana Farber."
I met with my assigned doctor in May and he explained the process: find a compatible donor, prep the body for the new stem cells, do the transplant and then recovery. It's January 2023 and after 100 days since my transplant, I am doing great!
My nurse explained to me that 20 years ago, the process I went through wasn't available. Many institutions tried and failed. But due to the research and hard work done at Dana Farber, they were able to provide treatment. They are #1 in the world in doing stem cell transplants. And the care I received at Dana Farber has been outstanding!
Prior to all of this, I was an avid cyclist. I always rode in charity rides and always wanted to ride the PMC. My doctor tells me that all signs indicate I should be able to particpate in this year's PMC. I have 8 months to get ready. Fingers crossed, all continues to proceed well!
I am also an avid Patriots fan. I have a team of cheerleaders supporting me through this process. I had one social media post from one of my supporters in Atlanta whch I love and want to share:
To the coolest, bike riding grandfather I know…you got this! After you beat this procedure like it’s the Falcons in the super bowl, I look forward to enjoying many 60 minute Dogfish Head IPA in celebration. You are loved, your spirit is unstoppable, and this is just third quarter of a 28-3 game baby!!!!
Hence, the 28-3 shirt while getting my transplat!
I'm a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading a charge to beat not only my MDS, but all cancers. In fact, 100% of rider-raised revenue went directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure.
