In 2002, I rode my first Pan Mass Challenge. I wanted to do something to help in the fight against cancer after losing my three aunts, two cousins and my grandmother to the disease in a span of less than 10 years. Now, as I prepare for my 21st ride I am as motivated to continue this journey towards a cure than I have ever been. With all of the generous donors and dedicated scientists working towards new treatments and cures, there is so much to be grateful for, and yet so much more work to do.
I could never understand why some people get hit harder than others with this disease. Why some survive, and some don't. Why even young children get cancer, or why some people's cancer returns after years in remisssion. None of the stories ever seem fair, and always seem to happen to the best people you know. The only thing I do know, is that riding in the PMC every year helps me to feel like I am not standing still against a disease that has affected so many.
Twenty-one years later, I now ride for ALL people affected by cancer. The patients and families I know. The patients and familes I don't know. And the families yet to meet their cancer challenge.
I would like to make a special mention of three high school friends of mine, Chris Cerrito, Diane Holmes and Meghan McDermott Stratton, and fellow PMC Alum Anthony Macchiarulo, all whom I will be especially thinking of this training season and on ride weekend in August. And as always, I ride for my Mom, who this past year thankfully beat cancer for a second time, with grace, strength and perserverance. Love you, Mom.
There has been so much progress, and so many people helped by the research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. There is still so much good in the world, and the PMC is definitely part of that good. Please once again consider a donation to my ride, as any amount helps. My goal this year is to raise at least $4,000 and surpass our lifetime total of $70,000. I thank you for your never ending support throughout the years. I have the BEST donor group around! You have made all the difference. As always, I will keep you and your families and friends who may have their own cancer stories in my heart this summer and beyond. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Warmest Wishes,
Sandra
