Hello everyone and welcome to my page! For the second time, I am choosing to ride 192 miles from Sturbridge to Provincetown during the PMC to raise money for cancer research at Dana Farber. In 2019 I did the PMC for the first time and I struggle to put into words how meaningful the experience was. There is a unique sense of camaraderie and community fostered by the over 6,000 riders and even more spectators that line the entire course.
Here are some impressive and inspiring statistics I’d like to share with you all:
The 2021 PMC raised $64 million - the most money ever raised by an athletic fundraising event. Since the first PMC ride in 1980, riders have raised a total of $831 million.
Since I'm sure many of you are unfamiliar with the PMC, here is a link that can offer a more in-depth description of the event and institutes that rely on the funds: https://www.pmc.org/what-we-do. I do want to point out that unlike many other fundraisers of this sort, 100% of rider-raised donations go directly towards funding cancer research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
In choosing to ride this year, I have made a commitment to raise the $6,000 minimum fundraising requirement. I am riding as part of my father's team, Team Crank, which has secured matching funds up to $400,000 from the Warren Alpert Foundation. Every dollar you donate to my ride will therefore be doubled!
Why have I personally chosen to bike ride almost 200 miles in 2 days? Because my family is no stranger to cancer. I missed meeting my paternal grandfather by only 6 months when he passed away in July of 1997 from melanoma. His wife, my grandmother, was a cancer survivor having beaten squamous cell carcinoma in 2016. In 2018, my 29-year-old cousin Kaitlyn was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. Thanks to cutting-edge research like that done at Dana Farber, I am happy to report she has been cancer free for three years.
This past May, my maternal grandfather was diagnosed with incurable stage IV pancreatic adenocarcinoma that has metastasized to his liver. I have spent my summer off from medical school taking my grandpa to countless appointments and treatment at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York City. I am writing this as I sit across from Papa, while he naps during his chemo infusion and between chats with the nurse about his Neupogen white blood cell booster and IV fluids schedule. I have seen how the diagnosis and treatment of his cancer affect my grandfather, grandmother, and the rest of our family.
Simply put, I am riding for all of them. I know I am not unique in being deeply affected by this disease. I, therefore, ask you to reflect on how cancer has affected you and your loved ones, and the impact your donation could have. Please share this page with anyone you know who would be interested in supporting this cause. I greatly appreciate your donations!
