I'm a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading a charge to beat cancer. All rider-raised revenue goes directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's effort to find a cure. Like many riders, I have had (and continue to have) close family and friends impacted by cancer so this is a good way to get involved. If it ever tags me, I want to feel like I did this.
I first rode the PMC three years ago from Sturbridge to P-town on a team of sixty people (Team Velomontti) from New Canaan and enjoyed "heavy hitter" fund raising status. That year, over $60 million was raised in total for Dana Farber. Last year there was no formal ride, but the riders rode solo their miles on the designated date and still raised over $40 million.
If you ever have a desire to ride it yourself, I highly encourage it. The training is great, the parties good and the ride itself is rewarding. A number of Dana Farber oncologists do the ride so some great conversations can be had a long the way. It is a surprisingly emotional experience (you will feel like superman), pretty much along the whole 200+ mile route people are standing along the side clapping and holding signs with pictures of family members with the words "thank you". As do many riders, I write the names (on my handlebars) of friends who have had to suffer from cancer and those (the real supermen and women) that have survived and hopeuflly licked it. It helps to look down at that when the limbs get tired.
In short, any support you can give is much appreciated as my goal is not so much the $$ total (I will match dollar-for-dollar the total amount of contributions) but the actual participation rate (if there are names to add to the handlebars, just lmk ,,, no donation required for that!).
All the best in any event for a healthy and jofyful summer. Russ
