It is with great sadness that we announce Rich Nolan has passed away on June 6th, 2013. In lieu of flowers, the Nolan
family has asked that donations be made to Rich's Pan-Mass Challenge
profile. Rich was signed up as a virtual rider this year, a member of
the Patriots Pedal Partners team. 100% of the
money the team raises is earmarked for Dr. Ken Anderson, the Kraft
Family Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber
Cancer Institute, to support his multiple myeloma research and
development of novel therapies.
Rich's 2012 profile can be found below. His passion for supporting this research speaks for itself.

Welcome to my 2012 PMC Profile page!
This year I'm signed up as a "Virtual Rider" as I’m currently recovering from a blood stem cell transplant to treat my form of cancer, multiple myeloma. Virtual means I'm raising funds, but not physically riding. I've also teamed up with an outstanding group that has a great history of raising money specifically for the multiple myeloma program at Dana Farber.
As I've developed resistance to many of the best anti-myeloma meds over the past few years, an allogeneic transplant gives me the hope for an immune response to fighting the disease by adapting to a new immune system. Probably the most effective means of fighting the disease, it is not without significant risk. Still, the potential upside makes it worthwhile. I wouldn't have this opportunity if it were not for the selfless donation of cells from my brother Terry. I was blessed in that we were a perfect match.
A few months ago I was invited to join the PMC team Patriots Platelet Pedalers. Last year, they numbered 117 riders and raised over $703,000 for Dana-Farber. The team has raised over $2.9 million since 2008! 100% of the money the team raises is earmarked for Dr. Ken Anderson, the Kraft Family Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, to support his multiple myeloma research and development of novel therapies. I'm truly honored to be a part of this team. Check us out at: http://neppp.org or the PPP Facebook page.
Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells, a type of white cell found in many tissues of the body, but primarily in the bone marrow. Plasma cells are part of the body's immune system. About 20,000 Americans will be diagnosed with myeloma this year. It is estimated that over 60,000 people in the United States are living with or are in remission from myeloma. In addition to the many risks the cancerous cells pose to patients' blood, organ damage, primarily to liver and kidneys is possible. Bone damage is common, as I've experienced and am now trying to manage chronic back and other bone related issues. While treatable, the disease is presently considered incurable by modern, allopathic medicine.
Developments towards new, effective treatments and the quest for a cure could not be possible without the generosity of countless, selfless individuals who choose to donate towards the cause. With PMC, 100% of all funds raised by riders go directly to the Dana-Farber Jimmy Fund. None of the money is used for administrative or organizational expenses. The PMC is considered among the leanest of fundraising organizations.
If you are compelled to donate, at whatever modest level your means may allow, I hope that my story provides you with the personal connection that will make it most meaningful to you. This is a hopeful time for myeloma patients. Progress towards a cure is under way. New myeloma drugs have been approved in the last few years, the pipeline is filling and new treatments are being studied. None of this would be possible without the generosity of those who care. Thank you for taking the time to read my update.
