I first met Steve when I was 7 or 8 because our parents were friends, and we became friends even though we went to different schools. It was special to have a friend who went to a different school, especially a friend who took you to see your first Bruce Springsteen concern in December,1980!! We remained good friends when we were at the same high school, and although we drifted apart a bit post-college we always stayed in touch, saw each other about once a year, and just eight months ago played golf together.

I’ll repeat.

8 months ago we played a great round of golf together.

7 months later I got a call from a friend telling me Steve had cancer with no viable treatment, but he was still living at home.

6 days later I heard Steve was in hospice.

5 days later I was able to visit with him and talk for about an hour before he was just too tired to continue.

4 days later I was told Steve had died.

So am I going to ride once again in the PMC and raise money for cancer? F’ yeah! I’ll be riding in Steve’s memory, while still riding in honor of so many of those close to me (old friends and new) who have suffered but continue to serve as living proof of both the progress we are making and how vital it is that we continue this progress and succeed to rid our world of this terrible disease.
