Our community was always there for Hedda as she was fighting medulloblastoma (brain tumor); we had the school band showing up outside our house, we had dog parades along our street, we had scout troops parading by, we had all the school teams in jerseys with her name and we had our ski race team competing for her and so did the competing race teams as well. We had the US Ski team calling her from the Olympics and cheering her on with their support. We celebrated Christmas and New Year’s eves and birthdays at the hospital with Hedda’s friends at her side. We had spontaneous gatherings that just showed up to be with Hedda. Hedda’s friends were always around.
After Hedda’s third relapse we had our relatives coming over from Sweden to be with her and our neighborhood vacated their houses so that we could all be together. These were the things that mattered to us. The things that were not possible during covid-19.
I wish for all children and families fighting cancer to know that we are there for them and that they are loved.
Thank you for supporting Dana Farber and most of all for being so supportive and caring for Hedda and our family. Hedda passed away at the age of 15 on March 2, 2018. She had been fighting medulloblastoma for almost 3 years. This year she would have been a freshman at college.
