Why I Ride ...
Greetings!
As you can see, I am back at the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) this year after a short hiatus. I was motivated to return this year to start a team to support a fine young man named Nathan Dibari.
For those of you who don't know him, Nathan was diagnosed with leukemia in February. His story is located on the link below:
http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/nathandibari
Nathan’s dad Dominic is my friend and college classmate. Kevin Freeman (another classmate) and I have formed "Team Nathan" and will ride the Pan Mass Challenge in support of Nathan and his family.
By forming Team Nathan, we are able to focus our fundraising efforts toward leukemia treatment and research. It is this type of research that has made Nathan's disease so treatable over the past 4 decades and given hope to so many.
When I started training for my first PMC a few years back, Elise told our daughters Emma and Sofia that “daddy’s going on a long bike ride.” Fortunately, that’s all they really understood then about our family’s bout with cancer because they are still so young. Eventually, they will more fully grasp why I am doing this. They will more fully appreciate what happened five years ago when their mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 35, underwent chemotherapy, surgery and is now a survivor. And given this family history, the large stake they have in making progress against cancer as well.
As we get closer to a cure, government funding is declining. That is why events like the PMC are so critical in helping us win the fight. I know times are tough for everyone. Please consider donating the sum of what it would cost to have a nice dinner at your favorite restaurant. Any donation will be appreciated and be assured that 100% of your gift will go to the Dana Farber.
