Dear family and friends,
On Sunday, August 7, I'll participate once again with Team Beans in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), joining more then 9,000 riders and volunteers.
Though I’ve ridden in the PMC since 2016, two years ago I joined PMC’s Team Beans, moved by the story of Francesca (“Beans”) Kaczynski, who died at age nine months on Christmas Eve, 2020 from complications resulting from treatment of a brain tumor. Though brain tumors are now the most frequent cause of death in children, treatment options for infants and young children — and funding to support them — are still extremely limited, often harsh, and too often require children and their families to live at the hospital for months, with little guarantee that treatment from even the best professionals in the field will work. Francesca’s parents have made it their mission to improve outcomes through expanded research, clinical trials and multidisciplinary support for children and families.
Since its launch, the team has raised more than $3 million from 20,000 donors through this and other events to support the new Infant Brain Tumor Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where Francesca was treated. Team Beans is the largest financial supporter of this program and already has helped to fund development of new drugs to target changes in the DNA of tumors.
For those of you who have contributed in the past, know that I’m very grateful and hope you will consider making a donation once again this year. For those who have not previously given, I hope you will consider joining the fantastic group of people who have been such a great support to me and to this effort. All funds from my ride will go directly to the Infant Brain Tumor Fund.
I love this event and am grateful that as I fast approach age 75, I’m still able to do this. I only hope the weather on August 7 is cooler than it has been in these recent weeks!
Nancy
