This August, I will be riding in my 3rd Pan Mass Challenge (PMC), a bike race that raises money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund, both of which focus their efforts on supporting cancer research and treatment. I believe in this cause and the work being done at Dana Farber because I have seen firsthand what an impact the proceeds of this event have for those who have been affected by cancer.
In addition to this being a charitable cause, here are some of the many reasons I ride…
I ride for Mark…As most of you know, my cousin Mark was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer in June of 2020 and has since been a patient at Dana Farber. Though it has been a difficult last few years and there is still progress to be made, Mark is doing great. Thanks to Dana Farber and his amazing doctor, Mark was part of a clinical trial that led to FDA approval (Immunotherapy for Kidney Cancer)!
I ride for Nonna…My grandmother Antonia who overcame various types of cancer throughout her life, but ultimately was taken by the horrible disease. She taught me strength, determination, and love for others. She was selfless and everything she did was for her family. I miss her every day.
I ride for Uncle Boom Boom…my uncle Felix who lost his battle with lung cancer. Aside from teaching me how to use a hammer (hence his name), he taught me the importance of working hard to be successful and never giving up when times are tough.
I ride for Meme…my father-in-law Felix who lost his battle with throat cancer. Unfortunately, I never had to opportunity to meet him, but he was an amazing man loved by all.
I ride for You…all the people: friends, family, neighbors, and strangers that support us through encouragement, money and more. Without you none of this would be possible!
Lastly, I ride for Dr. Alli…The Captain and founder of TEAM PERSPECTIVE Dr. Allison O’Neill! I ride for her: for her commitment, devotion, and dedication to caring for our youngest victims of this disease and her unwavering spirit and compassion. The doctors and nurses of Dana-Farber are amazing, inspirational, and deserving of our help and admiration.
The specific fund within Dana-Farber that receives your generous donations is Dr. O’Neill research fund for pediatric cancer. As Solid Tumor Program and Medical Director of the Liver Tumor Center of Excellence at Dana Farber and Boston Childrens Hospital, Dr. O’Neill is at the forefront of the incredible work being done at these fine institutions. However, this recognition should be shared with you as it is also recognition of the impact your contributions have made.
Thank you so much!
