On Saturday, August 6th I will be riding in my 10th PMC! It has been 21 years since my first ride, but happy to get back on the bike and raise money to find a cure for cancer. I will be riding 85 miles from Wellesley to Bourne.
A lot has changed since 2001 when I rode in my first PMC, but the fight against cancer continues. My first ride was the year my Dad, Alfred Gomes, lost his battle with cancer. Since then I, and many others, have had family and friends who have been diagnosed with the disease, are treating cancer, or unfortunately lost their battle with cancer. Riding my bike in the PMC is one small way to help out in fighting this disease and working towards a cure.
There are many wonderful events and causes and I know that it is difficult to choose where to donate your money. If you are able to donate any amount to this ride, know that 100% of the funds go directly to DFCI. This year I have re-joined the Patriots Platelet Pedalers team. All of the money this team raises is earmarked for Dr. Ken Anderson, the Kraft Family Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. While his focus is multiple myeloma research, he has helped develop new treatments which benefit not only patients with myeloma but also patients with breast cancer, lung, pancreas, and prostate cancers.
As I have during each of my PMC rides, on August 6th I will carry the names of loved ones who have suffered from cancer. If you would like me to include the name of your loved one, please let me know. It would be an honor. I know their fighting spirit will be with me that day.
Thanks for all your help and support and love.
