Because it is the right thing to do. Because we all know someone who's life has been impacted by cancer. Because winning this battle requires never quitting. And because I think I can make a difference.
I'm a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading a charge to beat cancer. In fact, last year 100% of rider-raised revenue went directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's (DFCI) tireless commitment to finding a cure. Since it's founding in 1980, the PMC has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for the DFCI.
This year I'm honored to join the FLAMES, a group of Massachusetts-based riders passionately committed to this cause.
2022 is my 6th year riding the PMC. Each year presents its own special challenges and rewards. Making this year even more memorable is that I'll be joined by my oldest son Kyle, who is riding in his second PMC!
Team History: The FLAMES were founded in 2001 by a Dana Farber cancer patient (teammate, Cindy Hale) who was fighting for her life along with her inspiring chemo and oncology nurses respectively from Dana Farber (Kathleen McDermott, teammate and Joanie Kelly, CaptN Emeritus). At the time it was a distant crazy idea, a goal that motivated her to survive and thrive. And she did.
Today: the FLAMES have many riding survivors and have been joined by other Dana Farber professionals, as well as friends , spouses/family members. Along the way, we have raised almost $9 Million dollars as of the completion of last year’s ride and fundraising. That is a staggering testimony to the powerful and unifying inspiration of this cause.
We ride for so many loved ones including ourselves as Team FLAMES has 19 survivors on the team - as well as doctors and nurses at Dana Farber. We ride for a cure, we ride to make a difference! Patients at the Jimmy Fund clinic and their families have been dealt a huge challenge - by riding we know we are shortening their stay and even saving their lives. Well worth the sweat we'd say.
“Dedicated” Funding: The FLAMES’ Dana Farber professionals that ride with us work in departments (Adult Oncology and Lymphoma) that we support with our team’s fundraising. PMC calls it “restricted funding”, we prefer “dedicated”. These two departments and these funds support clinical work against primarily blood cancers. The discoveries being made in these labs by our doctors are unrestricted by pharma funding, believe in “open-source” sharing of discovery, and focus on results and discoveries that help all cancers as blood cancers are universally applicable to all cancers. This unrelenting “open-source” clinical work within the non-profit Dana Farber Cancer Institute is leading the way not only here in the US but across the world. That is where our raised rider dollars go. Period. 100%. “Restricted”, my ass! Dedicated!
Our Mission: We like to have fun, be inclusive, be a team and raise money to eradicate cancer in our lifetimes. We are unrelentingly passionate about the PMC mission and Dana Farber’s work.
Here's information on a couple of my FLAMES teammates:
Dr. Jay Bradner, FLAMES teammate and “Physician/Scientist”
or “DeAngelo’ Shadow” J, Ted’s Talk Link, with more about “open-source” discovery, JQ1 molecule and his work: https://www.ted.com/talks/jay_ bradner_open_source_cancer_ research
Neil Goldberg’s 2014 PSA with CBS/WBZ Channel 4: http://www.pmc.org/psaNeil1. Oh, and Neil's the one who inspired me to join the FLAMES!
