2010: Obama was president, Trump a TV show host. The PMC had raised $270 million for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. I was 48: a bike rider looking to do something good. It was a challenge: riding 210 miles, raising $4000 to fight cancer.
This was good.
2024: The PMC breaks $1 billion. A monumental achievement. People are literally living longer. Many are completely cured. You all have helped me raise $120,000 dollars for the DFCI. There is hope.
And these years have seen my brother and sister die of cancer:
-
Sean died of pancreatic cancer in 2016. Quick, brutal.
-
Kathleen died of anal cancer in 2023. Long, painful.
So much has changed in 15 years. Especially for Sean and Kathleen. And for their children, and for me, and my family. All is different. As it is for all cancer patients, cancer survivors, those who die of cancer, and their families and friends.
Frankly, I am exhausted by it all.
And that is why I will ride the PMC.
$1 Billion brings promise: of comfort, of hope, and of cures. That is good. That I can support. And I hope you can, too, by continuing to give generously to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Thank you.
