Hello Friends,
It’s that time of year again. On August 6th & 7th, I will once again be participating in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC). This year marks my 24th year participating in this two-day 198-mile charity bike ride from Sturbridge to Provincetown. Some exciting news this year! My niece Abby is joining my sister and I on the triple! This is Abby's first PMC and she is both nervous and exccited. Together, our team of three hopes to raise over $30,000 for the PMC.
I ride the PMC in memory of my mother Joan Murphy (age 64) and my father Edmund Murphy (age 63). Both of my parents were far too young when they lost their battles with cancer.
I started riding the PMC 23 years ago. At the time, I had lost my father to lung cancer and my mother had recently been diagnosed with late-stage colon cancer. If you have ever lost a loved one to cancer, you've likely experienced the same frustration that I did, wanting to help, but not knowing how. It was in 1998 when a family friend told me about the great work the PMC was doing to support cancer research and treatment at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. A bike ride to raise money for cancer research - this was something I could do. So, I signed up, began to raise money, and prepare for the ride.
From the very beginning, my mother would help me with my fundraising and getting the word out. Together, we would print fundraising letters, send thank you cards, and of course, hit up our friends and family for donations. After my first ride, I was so inspired by my experience at the PMC that I committed to my mother that as long as I could ride a bike, I would continue to ride the PMC.
Ironically, as my mother's disease progressed, she would end up being treated at Dana Farber. We would then both see firsthand the impact all the PMC fundraising was having on cancer treatment. The care and treatment provided to my mom over the next few years would allow her to live far beyond her prognosis and with a quality of life that none of us expected.
While my mother ultimately passed away in 2004, her treatment at Dana Farber allowed her to continue to live her life, be a mom and a grandmother, and a good friend.
Please join me in the fight against cancer. To make a donation, click on the following link http://www.pmc.org/profile/KM0043 or click on Donate to my Ride.
By the way - In 2021, the PMC raised over $65 million for the Jimmy Fund and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. That's a lot of money! Most impressive is the fact that 100% of all rider-raised donations went directly to fight cancer. This is possible because the costs of running the PMC are borne by the riders and the event sponsors.
Many Thanks!
Kevin Murphy
