My brother, Dr. Andrew Place, was a sophmore in college and headed towards a career in the military when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was 19. The disease changed his life and mine. When he returned to college after surgery and a year of chemotherapy, Andy decided that a career in medicine was his goal. He is now a pediatric oncologist at Boston's Children's Hospital, an Assistant Professor, Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School, and Clinical Director, Hematologic Malignancy Program, Pediatric Oncology, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Bottom line: Andy tries to kill the cancer that tried to kill him.
My mom, Carol Place, died two years ago from pancreatic cancer. She carried herself with grace and dignity throughout her diagnosis, and the folks at New England Cancer Specialists (who are affiliated with Dana Farber) were phenominal in their care for her. Mom worked until the last 6 weeks of her life and Dana Farber undoubtedly ccontributed to the joy and wonder she found even in the most difficult times. She was a remarkable lady.
Fundamentally, the PMC changes lives for the better. The more I can do to support the work of Andy and all of the outstanding researchers and physicians at DFCI, the better the chance that we can find a cure for cancer. I'm all in.
