In 2002 I lost my mother, Helen Murphy, to cancer. My mother was diagnosed with cancer in August of 2002, and passed away on October 26, 2002. It was also in 2002, following my mother’s death that I found out that my brother was diagnosed with cancer. I’m sure it was for the sake of his wife and two children that my brother really gave it his all in his battle against this horrid disease. Unfortunately, David lost his battle with cancer on December 5, 2004. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of both my mother and my brother. I wish they were here today to meet my wife and sons.
In 2006 I met Susan Lane, my wife now of seventeen years. Cancer has deeply affected Susan’s life as well. When I met Susan she was a widow with a set of twin boys. Susan’s former husband, Alan Lane, lost his battle with brain cancer on June 21, 2003. I wish I could say that Susan only had one loved one who had battled cancer in her life, but unfortunately that is not the case. On January 9, 2014, Susan lost her father, Richard Scarry, to cancer as well. Richard (Papa) was a great man, and is missed by my family dearly.
As you can see cancer has really put a great strain on those that surround me. I remember when I had a loved one battling cancer people would try to console me by saying “ You have to stay positive, they’re constantly working and researching for a cure”. Well this work and research doesn’t come without a price, and this is why I ride.
I'm a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading a charge to beat cancer. In fact, last year 100% of rider-raised revenue went directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure.
