Why I Ride ...
This is my third year riding in the Pan Mass and now it's gotten personal. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer on June 15, 2012 and as such, my funds are directed to prostate cancer research at Dana Farber. The program is called "The Lank Center for Genitourinary Oncology." If you want to find more details, I can get the program report to you via e-mail.
So now the tables are turned and instead of looking in, I AM in. I now count myself among the cancer's victims/survivors and still have great empathy for all those with more serious forms of cancer.
I had surgery last August, but they did not get all the bad stuff. So radiation is the next course of treatment although given an undetectable PSA, there apparently is no hurry. I am benefiting from all the good work Dana Farber does along with many Boston area urologists. Please help me support life-saving cancer research by donating in my name to the 2011 Pan Mass Challenge -- donation code JD0379.
Cancer is second leading cause of death in U.S. with 1.4 million new cases reported every year. And that does not include skin cancer, which accounts for another 900,000 cases including my wife Ann (she's ok). Colon cancer claimed her mother and grandmother and my mother had a mid-life mastectomy and lymphoma for several years before she died. And it's affected members of my extended family. Hardly anyone in America goes untouched by cancer in some way. You can find me on Twitter (www.twitter.com/thedodgeretort) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/john.dodge2).
