Pedaling for a Cause - Darryl Jelley

For the past seven years, I’ve dedicated myself to raising awareness and support for pancreatic cancer. My efforts began with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute PMC Ride, a two-day event across Massachusetts. I ride alongside individuals who share a mission: to promote awareness and find cures for cancers that impact our lives. I am excited to participate in my seventh PMC again this year, but with an added challenge. I will be undertaking a solo ride. In May, I plan to embark on a remarkable journey from Maine to Key West, covering 2,028.5 miles over the course of one month.

This ride is in addition to my participation in the 2025 August Dana-Farber Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) ride. I see this as an opportunity to challenge myself physically and amplify my message about the critical need for cancer research and funding. Throughout this journey, I aim to share stories and engage in conversations about the importance of supporting cancer care. It’s vital that we recognize the efforts of researchers and advocates working tirelessly to improve the lives of those affected by cancer.

Together, we can make a difference in the fight against this disease. I hope my ride will inspire others to get involved, whether by sharing their stories or supporting vital research initiatives. Join me on this journey, and let’s make our voices heard in the battle against cancer.

Why I ride:

I ride for my late wife, Christine.
Christine and I were married for 26 years and have two amazing girls. She led a healthy and active life. She loved animals (any animal) and had lots of friends. But, most of all, she had an incredible heart.

This is why everyone who knew her was shocked when, without warning, she was unexpectedly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, with a survival rate of one percent. She was admitted at once to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, and a month later, she lost her fight.

The girls and I lived in her hospital room and watched the incredible teams of doctors and nurses come and go around the clock. I would walk the halls in the middle of the night, wondering if anything could be done. But I knew that everyone was doing everything humanly possible. I never realized cancer's impact on patients and everyone around them. I never really had to deal with it this close-up.

That's why helping to find a cure for cancer is so important to me. I want others to avoid this terrible disease and its lasting effects, which is why I ride for PMC.

I ride for those fighting cancer. I ride for those yet to get cancer. I ride for my late wife Christine. I ride for my sister and late mother.
