Summer 2022
Dear Friends, Family, Colleagues and Clients:
The past two years have been challenging for many and I hope you and your loved ones are well. I hope that you and your family are healthy and safe and are remaining in good spirits during these difficult and unprecedented times. This year will be the 43rd Anniversary of The Pan Mass Challenge (PMC) and my 21st year as a PMC Rider. The PMC has been profoundly changed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The PMC raises funds for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a world leader in adult and pediatric cancer treatment and research.
This year, the PMC, a fully supported bike-a-thon is back and will include 16 different bike routes spanning from 25 to 211 miles over the first weekend in August. PMC 2022 will include both fully supported routes and reimagined rides, allowing all riders to customize the PMC for levels of safety, fundraising, mileage and logistics that will work for each and every rider.
The PMC is thousands of like-minded people, approximately (5,700 Riders) joined together from approximately 43 states and 12 countries to achieve a common goal that serves the greater good, delivering millions of dollars that translates directly into lives saved as well as genuine hope for all of us. It raises money for research and care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) in Boston. The primary goal of this truly remarkable event is to raise funds in support of the Jimmy Fund and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and our common goal is to find a cure for cancer. Over the last 42 years, the PMC has raised approximately $831 million to support cancer research, patient care and to improve the lives of those suffering with cancer at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Last year the PMC raised $64m for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and our overall goal for this year (2022) is to raise $66m. The PMC is the single largest contributor of the Jimmy Fund; bringing in more than 55 percent of its annual revenue at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, dedicating 100% of every dollar raised. Most of us give money to many charities. I dedicate my greatest energies to this charity. So, as I said before, there is a lot riding on this.
I began training for this ride in late March of this year and continue to do so, on a weekly basis (weather permitting). Cancer does not discriminate; it does not care how old you are. It hasn’t skipped over the people we love and care about.
Once again, I have decided to combine my passion for riding and raising money for the cure for cancer. In the past years, I have lost various family members, friends and business colleagues near and dear, to cancer. This will be my (21st) twenty-first year riding to raise money in finding a cure for cancer. This year, Day One is an 86-mile ride from Babson College in Wellesley, MA to The Mass Maritime Academy in Bourne, MA. Day Two starts in Wellesley at Babson College and loops back to the Babson Campus for a 100-mile loop.
I ride in memory of my Beloved Grandmother Helen, my Wonderful Uncle Henry and various friends and business colleagues who lost their battle to cancer. All of them were exceptional people and well loved.
For twenty years in a row, I am honored to be part of Team Zakim. Team Zakim was originally a Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walking group that was formed in 1998 as Team Zakim, formerly known as Team Lenny. This is the twenty-first year that Team Zakim will be participating in the PMC. Team Zakim is named in memory of (Leonard P. Zakim) the Regional Director and Civil Rights Leader of the Anti-Defamation League of New England, who died of Multiple Myeloma at a young age of 46. During December 2000, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute established The Leonard P. Zakim Center for Integrated Therapies and Healthy Living, and honored the memory of Leonard “Lenny” Zakim. The Zakim Center for Integrated Therapies has helped patients take an active role with their own treatment, in their fight to survive cancer.
Having raised approximately $135,000 over the last twenty cycling years, my personal goal for this year is $12,000. My commitment to this cause has grown more this year as I have agreed once again to be a member of Team Zakim. I hope you can continue to help me achieve this significant goal. Every donation brings us closer by the mile.
