We're all affected by cancer in some way throughout our lives. The unlucky ones, multiple times. Family, friends, co-workers, direct connections, or second hand acquaintances. In the moments where cancer appears, you can feel helpless against it. Being caring and present is a start, but often doesn't feel like enough. I'm action oriented and feel the need to contribute in my own way.
These reasons are enough on their own. And also—
I am riding in support of our dear friend who was recently diagnosed with a rare form of stage 4 lung cancer.
She’s an active mom of three who receives her care at Dana-Farber and speaks highly of her team, support and the strides they are making.
By doing this ride, our team will help fund more research
in support of all of the individuals & families who are
living with and navigating through diagnosis, treatment and beyond
And that's why I've chosen to participate in the Pan-Mass Challenge this year, raising funds for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. 100% of every dollar goes directly to Dana-Farber, supporting research in the hunt for cures for cancer and related diseases.
Specifically, Molly Brigham & I have joined Team LUNGSTRONG to rally around Dr. Barbie and colleagues in the labs at Dana-Farber & Mass General Thoracic Cancer Center.
Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, killing more Americans each year than breast, prostate, colon and pancreatic cancers, combined. Yet lung cancer research is the least funded, relative to mortality rates. Only 18% of those diagnosed with lung cancer live for five years or more, with most succumbing to the disease within the first year. 60% of those diagnosed with lung cancer either have never smoked or haven’t smoked for decades. With increased funding for research we can reduce the mortality rates for lung cancer.
The Lowe Center of Thoracic Oncology at Dana Farber is a leader in innovative research in lung cancer. As one of the nation's premiere lung cancer programs, the Lowe Center of Thoracic Oncology is raising the bar for thoracic treatments by fostering collaboration between its clinical and laboratory researchers in order to provide optimal, individualized therapies to patients.
