If you have landed on this page, you might already have seen this, but just in case, I am adding an update to my original profile here. Original below the next two paragraphs...
UPDATE to my last post on the PMC bikathon:
On my training ride the other day, I realized (while struggling on a big hill), that I have additional inspiration that I can draw on to push me even harder, to complete this race...
Unfortunately for him and his family, John Perrotta, my good friend, my longtime boss and President of Europlacer Americas, has been diagnosed with a form of cancer that requires he start some very long and unpleasant treatments. His attitude and prognosis is very good and we are all confident they will rid him of it, but I will now also be riding with him in mind, too.
Please consider helping me reach my fundraising goal by donating, any amount, at the link below or go to pmc.org/ donate and put my name, Chris Merow. Thank you.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: To my Family, my colleagues, friends, acquaintances, and especially people who see this who have been negatively affected by CANCER of any kind or positively affected by the wonders of modern cancer medicine… In just 24 days, I am going to undertake a new and larger challenge than I have in a long time and I must reach out to as many people as I can to make sure that this worthy cause gets the attention it deserves.

Quick background on my efforts…After 10 months of suffering an achillies injury, doing ½ of the Pan Mass Challenge (85 miles) last year, my recovery is 80% complete, but I am out of time to completely heal. So, even though I signed up to do the whole 2-day event this year (182 miles), I have been hesitant to announce fund raising efforts to the public, in fear that generous people would donate money to this worthy cause, but I might not be able to actually participate in the race. The result is that I am WAY behind in raising the $6,000 that I have personally committed to and I need to start today, because I am now fully committed. As I write this at 430 in the morning, I am stretching to go out on a 40 mile ride and inspired to cathartically put to paper (for myself), AND share with you, what this race means to me, and tens of thousands of riders and their loved ones…
Why I ride…
My closest living relative, Tom Gilroy, has been getting treatment for an aggressive glioblastoma for the last 2 years plus. He has endured more than I can share but has done so with the inspiring love and support of his family, an inner strength and dignity I couldn’t imagine to have, and the amazing work of Dana Farber Cancer Research group, who are responsible for hundreds of modern day, targeted therapies for all types of cancers. The PMC bike-a-thon that over 6,000 riders participate in every August, has raised close to a billion dollars toward their efforts and I am proud to be just one their supporters.
The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is a renowned bike-a-thon held annually in Massachusetts. It is dedicated to raising funds for cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Here are some key points about the event:
Fundraising Impact: The PMC is the largest single athletic fundraising event in the U.S., raising more money for charity than any other event of its kind.
100% Donation Model: Impressively, 100% of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Community and Support: The event is supported by a vast network of riders, volunteers, corporate sponsors, and individual donors, all contributing to its success and mission1.
The PMC is not just a ride; it’s a powerful movement towards a world without cancer.
2023: During my MANY hours of training, I have had time to reflect on the amazing work that the Dana Farber Cancer Institue has done, helping my cousin remain cancer free for 1 full year now, after an intense clinical trial with targeted, dna focused, tumor targeted vaccine therapy, chemotherapy and more. I can't help but think, unfortunately, how many of us in the future will have a spouse, parents, grandparents, siblings, kids, an Uncle or an Aunt who's lives could be saved thanks to the groundbreaking research that fundraisers like the PMC enable Dana Farber to accomplish. Please go to the PMC donation page The PMC - Donate , sponsor a rider, then type in Christ Merow to help me exceed my goal...Any amount you can donate will be greatly appreciated.
May 2023: I'm a proud supporter of the PMC because it is leading a charge to beat cancer. In fact, last year 100% of rider-raised revenue went directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure.
