PMC 2021 – We are back!
It is hard to describe the excitement I felt getting back on the bike this year to train for PMC 2021. The sense of normalcy that our first training ride brought was immense – and while we aren’t quite back to the way things were, this felt like a great step.
Last summer was the first since 2014 that I have not had that sense of excitement, as COVID turned the world upside down, and the PMC was virtual. For 6 years, I took for granted how lucky I was to participate this amazing event—and 2020 made me realize even more how much this annual challenge means to me. 2020 was a year of many unusual firsts –and it was the first year since 1980 that the PMC ride did not go off as planned. Covid cancelled so many sporting events. Unfortunately, though, the PMC is more than just a bike ride or spectator sporting event. It is the single largest athletic fundraiser in the country. 100% of funds raised go directly to and are relied on by The Jimmy Fund at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Each year, the PMC represents more than 60% of The Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue, much of which was missed due to the pandemic in 2020. PMC 2021 isn’t just about returning to normal and getting back to an event that we love so dearly – we have a lot of work to do.
My Mom rode her first PMC 20 years ago this year, not knowing that she was starting an important legacy through this ride. She rode her first PMC using her athleticism and health to fight for kids with cancer, never thinking that one day, all too soon, she would be waging her own cancer battle. Since her passing in 2007, Team Jenstrong has raised over $900 thousand for the fight against cancer. I feel sure she would be pretty proud of where we are today.
This year, the PMC has another ambitious goal of raising $52 million for cancer research, and we have a big part to play. Each year, it has hard to put into words how thankful I am for every dollar that has ever been donated to my ride. I am proud to carry on my mother’s legacy and fight to conquer the disease that took her life. I would not be able to do that without your support.
I am asking again for your support in this fight so I can ride for those who cannot. This event is incredibly special, but more importantly, it plays a huge role in saving lives, funding research and bringing us closer to a cure.
Please consider donating to be a part of this important cause.

PMC 2019
This year, more than ever, taking the bike down off the wall for my first PMC training ride felt like an annual ritual for me.
With no major milestones to mark my sixth year of riding, settling into that first training session felt a lot like this past year of my life. I’ve spent it settling into a new job in the “real world” with a new sense of direction and purpose, navigating changes and new terrain. But as I got through the first few miles, the comfort and familiarity began to set in. The Pan Mass Challenge no longer feels like a new endeavor for me, I have not been the new rider on Team Jenstrong for several years now (thanks Meg). This year, I feel like the Pan Mass Challenge is an annual ritual that will always mark my life in the real world - a world without my mother and those like her. For me, there will be a reason to keep riding until there is a cure.
In its 40th year this year, the Pan Mass Challenge has thrown down a massive goal of raising $60 million. A they have done since 1980, this organization continues to raise the bar and refuses to yield to this terrible disease. Each year that I have had the opportunity to participate in this amazing event, I am increasingly thankful for the friends and family that have supported this cause, all the way back to when my mom rode her first of multiple PMC’s nearly 20 years ago. This year, as I prepare to push off the starting line in Wellesley for the sixth time, I am truly grateful for everyone who has supported my cause, and enabled me to honor this ritual that means as much to me as it did to my mom.
On August 3rd and 4th, alongside family, friends, and for the first time, co-workers, I get to once again carry on my mother’s legacy by making the 163 mile journey to Provincetown, something that would be impossible without each and every sponsor of my ride.

Since 1980, the Pan-Mass Challenge has raised nearly $600 million that has gone directly to cancer research at Dana Farber, one of the world’s leading cancer research institutes. Each year, this event sets a new fundraising records for an annual athletic event. Signing up for my 5th PMC ride this year, those fact sheet stats are still meaningful – but there is so much more behind why I keep coming back, why my family keeps coming back and why my mom first took on this challenge when I was a child.
Behind the amazing amounts of fundraising done by the PMC every year is a sea of riders, volunteers, supporters and donors who share a unique experience of courage, intention and positive energy. The experience is hard to put into words, but is captured by the faces that fill the one-mile stretch leading up to the Lakeville water stop. The road is lined with the photos of the PMC Pedal Partners, children with cancer who have been paired with a cycling team. Every year, this stretch of road connects me to my mom and reminds me why she originally committed to Pan Mass Challenge. While the PMC’s mission to eradicate cancer in all who suffered spoke to her – it was her passion for children fighting cancer that inspired her to ride. She rode the PMC with Friends for Life, a team formed by the parents of a young cancer survivor to support pediatric cancer research and treatment. She was hooked right away. Making a difference for kids struggling to recapture their health and their lives.
Earlier this year, a young man entered my life who is the living embodiment of a fighting spirit. His name is Harry Borodemos and he’s one tough 8-year-old who was drafted as a member of my hockey team at Brown through Team Impact. For years now, he has fought a rare juvenile autoimmune disorder that has required extensive and exhausting treatments. Yet, he never lets it affect his spirit, meeting it all head on with a smile on his face and a will to enjoy our next video game challenge or sporting event. Spending time with Harry made me understand how my mother felt so drawn to PMC. While Harry does not battle cancer – he battles for what we often take for granted—the gift of health. Like my mother did 15 years ago when she was well, I feel incredibly grateful that I can use my health to help those who don’t have that same gift. I ride with Harry in my heart and with a special passion for children who battle cancer. They deserve better and I want to be part of making that happen with Team Jenstrong.
I have come to realize that with each PMC I ride, I learn more about my mother. I understand more deeply her passion for the cause and her joy in being part of it. I think about her protective love for struggling children and my bond with Harry. For as much as I give to the Pan Mass Challenge –it gives me something so valuable in return. The chance to keep learning new things about my mother and realizing just what a treasure she really was, even 11 years after losing her.
I ride in her honor and I ride to keep the work that meant so much to her and means so much to me moving forward. I am truly grateful for any support you can provide.

I can still feel my mother’s joy when she crossed the finish line of her last Pan Mass Challenge. It feels like a lifetime ago when I think of all she has missed and how I have missed her.
The Pan Mass Challenge has meant so much to me and to my entire family for many years; a ritual of our summers and an event that we look forward to in a bittersweet way. As I sit down to write this letter, I dream of a day when I will no longer have to ride for those who can’t, for those who have left us too soon, and for those who grieve. I dream of seeing the PMC achieve their mission, so simply and eloquently stated on their web site ‘Until We Find a Cure’
10 years ago, my mother Jen lost her battle against cancer, a battle that started long before her diagnosis. Her passion for the PMC was born out of a desire to actively combat childhood cancer. She started her fight against cancer on the bike healthy and a few years later continued it after countless rounds of chemo; she truly never quit. As she took on the ride for the first time, she never could have imagined that one day, she would battle through it in between her own punishing cancer treatments. Every year that I do this event, I am so proud to continue the fight that my mother cared so deeply about.
I always wondered how someone who was so incredibly dedicated to health, someone who was so joyful about using her own good health to eradicate this disease could end up falling victim to it. But cancer does not discriminate. It has no sympathy, compassion, logic or soul. It is a shameless thief. In the 10 years since I lost my mother, it has taken my grandfather, Jack, and my grandmother, Ann, both of them still vibrant, funny and so beloved. Cancer is greedy too. Only months after losing my mother, my father overcame melanoma. He continues to ride, fight, and be my family’s greatest inspiration.
Cancer will never say ‘enough’ and disappear—so we have to say it and make it so. That is the work of the PMC and the heart of Team JENSTRONG .
On August 5th and 6th, my sister Meghan, my dad and the rest of Team JENSTRONG will ride the 160-mile Pan Mass Challenge. It is our way of saying ‘enough’ and being relentless about making it so.
The PMC is trying to raise a record breaking $48 million in 2017, and every rider raised dollar goes directly to the fight against cancer. I am so very grateful for any support you can provide.

Two summers ago, I made a decision—to commit to the PMC in a whole new way. I made a commitment to ride in my first Pan Mass Challenge having no idea that my decision to go from a passionate Team Jenstrong fan to a rider on the team named for my late mother would change my perspective so much. Despite many years of watching my Mom, Dad and many close friends cross the finish, I truly did not know what to expect from my first ride. Now, this event is an enormous part of my life as my third and most exciting ride quickly approaches. On August 6th and 7th, I will take on the PMC with Team Jenstrong’s largest contingent in many years, including one of our newest members: my little sister Meghan.
Team Jenstrong was created 10 years ago to support the biggest inspiration in my life: my mom Jen. She rode the Pan Mass Challenge to help raise money for cancer research even while she was trying to conquer the disease herself. When she became too ill to ride, my Dad Mike, a cancer survivor himself, took her place and he is now in his 14th year of this amazing event. I have been lucky enough to have two of the most inspirational parents in the world. Their efforts have enabled us to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Jimmy Fund. This year is extremely special to me as Meghan joins the team and rides beside us. Seeing Meghan on the bike this year has reminded me so much of the weekends I spent following my mom along the route to the PMC finish line. Meghan has the same athletic intensity and determination that my mom was known so well for. It will be such a great experience to do the ride with her and Team Jenstrong as we continue to fight for a cure. The fight feels ever more personal as we lost our colorful and beloved ‘Papa’ to lung cancer in March.
The PMC has an ambitious goal this year: to raise $46 million in funds that will go directly to cancer research and ultimately a cure. Riding with more members in my family this year is something my mother would have been so thrilled and proud to witness. We ride with a fierce determination to conquer cancer and we are incredibly grateful for your support.

PMC 2015
As an onlooker, it is difficult to understand the power and emotion behind the Pan Mass Challenge: a bike-a-thon that raises millions of dollars for The Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber every year. Throughout my childhood, I was on the sidelines as a spectator, feeling incredible pride for my mom or my dad- and one year, in good health and good times, both of them. But until I rode in the PMC last year, I was unable to fully appreciate what it is like to be in the midst of thousands of riders who all have a story, a reason, a place in their hearts for someone that keeps them riding. It is an amazing event. My first PMC kicked off in a driving rain last August (described as the worst weather in the 35+ years of the event), posing one of the most difficult physical challenges of my life. Surrounded by close friends and family, we pushed through the rain and I finally got to experience the course my mom loved so much with my dad at my side. The support I received from friends and family was unforgettable. It was an easy decision to commit to my second year of the PMC, which will take place on August 1st and 2nd of 2015.
As a part of Team Jenstrong’s 9th year, I will again make the 163 mile journey from Wellesley to Provincetown. Our team was founded to honor family and friends who have been effected by cancer. Since day one, the team has been led by my two biggest inspirations: my parents. My mom, Jen, was the focal point and biggest supporter of the team after she was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. She had an undeniable passion for the event, riding for several years and raising thousands of dollars before her diagnoses. When she reluctantly had to sit out the ride, my dad, Mike, filled in and is now in his 11th year at this event. A cancer survivor himself, he has been the mainstay for our team and I am very excited to ride alongside him once again. Through the generosity of my friends and family, I raised over $7,000 and our team raised over $63,000. I cannot express how thankful I am for every donation.
I can’t wait to be surrounded by the spirit of the PMC again this August--so many riders with so many reasons for riding. I am proud to join them for reasons that mean so much to me. I am grateful for any contribution you can make to our cause. 100 percent of every donation goes directly to cancer research and our record setting goal of $45 million. This would put the event at an astounding $500 million raised over 36 years. I am riding in honor of all those who have been affected by this terrible disease and I greatly appreciate any support you are able to provide.

PMC 2014
For the past 10 years, the first Sunday in August has meant driving to Provincetown to be at the finish line of the Pan Mass Challenge: a bike-a-thon that raises millions of dollars for The Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber every year. This year, I will no longer be a spectator of this great event. On August 2nd & 3rd I will join the cause as I ride my bike 163 miles from Wellesley to Provincetown as a part of the 2014 Pan Mass Challenge.
This event has always been an important part of my life and I am extremely excited to give up my role as an onlooker and become a rider. I will ride alongside friends and family as a part of Team Jenstrong’s 8th PMC. Our team was started in 2007 when my mother, Jen, passed away of nasopharyngeal cancer. My mom had a passion for this event and a passion for bike riding, but more importantly she had a passion for curing cancer - long before it affected her. Since then my teammates have raised over $400,000 for cancer research. I am excited to honor my mother’s passion for the PMC cause by riding alongside my dad and our team captain, Mike, a cancer survivor himself. All together, they have fought for over a decade to beat cancer with incredible bravery. As I begin my PMC journey this year, I look to channel the strength and passion my parents and Team Jenstrong’s members have demonstrated through every challenge on and off the road.
100 percent of every donation goes directly to cancer research and this year’s goal is 40 million dollars.

I am riding in honor of all those who have been affected by this terrible disease and I greatly appreciate any support you are able to provide.
