At just 42 years old, my step-father John Florentine lost a 10-month battle with Leukemia. He left behind 6 children ranging from 1-19, and a loving wife. It’s been 17 years since John’s passing, and I still think of him every day. His work ethic, discipline, loyalty, and dedication live on within me. John was an excellent role model, and helped me become who I am today. He instilled in me his life motto of, “whatever it takes”. He taught me what it is to work hard and accomplish a task, no matter how difficult. I think of him when I make tough decisions, when I’m stressed, when I’m happy, and when I’m proud. I thought of him when I became a husband, and again when I held each of my children for the first time.
John was purposeful in everything he did, without explanation. When I was very young he taught me important life skills that I still use to this day. Although, those were tough lessons as a kid, I did not always understand what he was trying to teach me, and the unfortunate thing, I didn't fully understand until after he was gone.
John was his happiest when he was with his family, we were his purpose in life, and we’re all better because of him.
This August I will ride the Pan-Mass Challenge, a 50 mile bike ride across Massachusetts, in John’s honor.
John’s story is a unique one, but my loss is not. I know that many of you may have lost a loved one, are survivors, and warriors. Please help me end this disease that’s robbed us all of a fuller life.
